Drumroll Me Up When September Ends (30/09/16)

How is that the Taiko Team after-livestream Twitter snapshots like the one above look so hectic? What grueling events have made the Taiko girls and Etou feel so tired?!? The answers to these questions (and more) lie in our usual broadcast recap, for the pleasure of our English-speaking audience.

Lady luck shines upon us once again, as some keen Taiko fan has uploaded the whole broadcast on Youtube! While our digressed version is still appearing below these lines, the video down there is for those who want to see the over-4-hour broadcast for themselves, complete with video-related pieces that mere screenshots alone can't do justice for. (We'll still warn you when the major video cues are coming, don't worry!)

This livestream's pre-broadcast portion has been filled with random silliness from the Team and the viewers once again, with activities ranging from answering to some of the #QuestionsToTaikoTeam inquiries from Twitter and up to funny name suggestions for the next Taiko arcade version.

For this run, the discontinued Comments Challenge has made its grand comeback, with the audience breaching through all four milestones. The list has been made visible both in the pre-livestream and the 'real' portions, but there's something quite different from the two pictures...

If you've spotted the difference, then let me just say that IT IS EXTRAORDINARY

After about an hour in, we hit break time with a slightly-tense trailer for an upcoming episode of Audio Deka, which also ran later on for the 2nd break portion. If you want to see it by yourself life, jump to this point of the video we linked at the top of this feature!

For the incoming Season 4, it appears we have quite the mischievous villain to deal with, as the miker known as LINDA-EQ is bound to unleash earthquakes all around the world through his audio waves alteration skills! (Now, I'm sure I've heard that name before...)

It's also nice for once that we got a movie-styled credits roll for this teaser, with Yano Yoshito taking most of the credit (as expected) together with... 'Someone'?

What, was Alan Smithee not available for this one?

When the proper livestream portion begins, we are greeted with Takemoto and Anne showcasing some of the most recent Taiko-related merchandise they have at a hand's reach on their desk, also starring the promo coaster for the Asobi Motto campaign we also talked about before.

Right after that was the Taiko 3DS3 DLC portion, but since we've been already made aware of the new content right before the broadcast (link), the only new fruitful bit of info we have at hand is the identity of newcomer Namco Original Ryuu to Kokuen no Himegimi's creators.

A short clip of the song in question was also played, but in a few hours (as of this post's original posting date) we should be able to have video footage of the whole track anyways!

There has also been a reminder to the Game Music Ranking x Tenkaichi Otogesai livestream on Nicovideo that happened the next Monday, but for that one we'll just forward you to our related feature (link) for the full details on that one.

Always in collaboration-related talk, the Taiko no Tatsujin franchise will pay a visit to the Autumn Reitasai that is going to happen on October 16th, so they might as well pack something exclusive for its attenders once again!

To be more specific, every Banapassport holder attending at this Reitasai edition will get a handful of previously-released Touhou customization content automatically unlocked, including an exclusive release of the Reimu Hakurei Petit Chara's blue variant.

Taiko cabinets will also be here to try out Touhou songs, including the limited-returning Crany remix of Beat Mario's Help me, ERINNNNNN!!

This is also a good time like another to remind public arcade Taiko players of the ongoing Touhou Project campaign and its new unlocks.

Up next was another portion for some Dojo Ranking talk, featuring the partial trial results for Red Version's DR set (as of September 27th). Sadly, these pictures' quality isn't the best, but hopefully the Team will come up with Hi-resolution scans for the time of their own livestream recap!

One big un-advertised feature, however, is the introduction of the so-called Dojo Ranking Side Stories, a new set of trials where fans' feedback is key!

Basically, these are a set of trials whose songs are picked by the Taiko Team while their naming is decided by Taiko fans through a number of special events, such as this very livestream! Each of the trials is classed as a sort of side-quest to the main ones, corresponding to one particular trial each.

As you can see by the two big circles in there, the title for the first Side Quest course had to be decided during the livestream among one of Taiko gaming's notecharters! ultimately, Dark Attribute took the lead for the course.

The subsequent Red Version corner has greeted us with October 2016's DonChare rewards, starring a chef-themed outfit as a reward. If you play once during said month and purchase the other part in the Rewards Shop, even the worst failures at the stove can stick two pans on their hips and claim themselves to be 3* Michelin chefs! (not really)

For another month in a row we also get a song revival, with the (quite old) Taiko March!

In the 'New Updates' front, it was revealed that the next software update will come with a couple of new songs for everyone to enjoy, with one being notorious from its source game to be a boss track and the latter completely-new creation seemingly joining the ranks of the God Collection.

Other tweaks included in the next update are a new Red Version Title Parts Gacha campaign and a shorter afternoon closing time for Tokkun Mode, as opposed to what we said in our Quick Takeaways... (sorry for that)

With that, the more serious portion of the broadcast was ended, continuing with the much-anticipated Livestream Fun Time. First in order was the Taiko Team vs Viewers quiz showdown!

The quiz was made of two different portions: the first one was an 'Expert' version of Wii U games' Intro Don mode, where the stream viewers had to guess a Taiko song with a really short audio cue, while the second part had a trio of more trivia-akin questions for the audience.

While we can copy-paste pictures of the static questions down there, if you want to partake in the Intro Don segment, we invite you to click here for the aforementioned Youtube recording's LFT segment. Beware that the first two songs are 1-second-or-less cuts from the actual songs, while the latter couple instead have a long audio cue of the guitar accompaniment only of a random portion of the involved songs.

As for the questions, here they are! The answers are at the bottom of this post.

Q1.Which one of this Don-Chan drawings was made by Taiko Team member Sasaoka?

Q2. Which one of the following pictures of Mr.Turtle was used for White Version's J-Pop folder?

Q3. How many different faces are there available at the notes "don" and "kat" during a song... which is caused by the increasing of combo?

1. 5 patterns of faces
2. 4 patterns of faces
3. 3 patterns of faces
4. 2 patterns of faces

During this peculiar portion, there has also been space for some kind of silliness in-between... including this:

Yup, that's an empty sheet for Etou to drawn his Don-Chan in! The Taiko Team has had 10 seconds to draw his versin, ultimately coming up with...

There also are a couple of trivia facts concerning the twin iDOM@STER MUST SONGS games to learn!

For one, in both games it's possible to hear recurrent im@s clerk Kotori Otonashi humming Majide...!? if certain conditions are fulfilled in either one of the titles. Plus, if you play the im@s Shiny Festa song Visionary backwards (like, say, in the games' Lesson Room), you'll be able to hear the phrase 'Idolm@ster Daisuki!' (lit. 'I Love Idolm@ster!')

The quiz was proven to be ultimately successful for the users, as all four available Namco Original revival options were unveiled! As you can see from the snapshot below, the song that will get a revival on both Red Version and 3DS3 is the always-classic Fuun! Bachi o Sensei

For the final portion of the whole run, we get across the portion which was dedicated to #Music SentaiCombination, the other Twitter campaign by the Taiko Team.

Out of the votes that have been casted for the poll, the following 7 notecharters were the most voted ones. Congrats!

Another live round of votations was helt in order to decree the three winners, ultimately resulting in the trio of Dark Attribute/Masubu-Chuji/Takemoto being in charge of a future forked-paths song's Master/Advanced/Normal routes respectively.

The very last poll for this run, however, was for the 10k comment goal's title part decision, which has ultimately seen Stock Market as the true victor.

And now we come to the end of the broadcast, where the reaching of the 76.500 comment milestone has made the hosts rave under a special version of !!!Chaos Time!!! remixed by Yuji Masubuchi for the occasion. Now we finally know why the crew was so tired for the post-broadcast Twitter snapshots!

Thanks for sticking with us! See below the answers to the Taiko Team's visual questions from above.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q1. Which one of this Don-Chan drawings was made by Taiko Team member Sasaoka?
A. It's No. 3! The other drawings' authors are also revealed below.

Q2. Which one of the following pictures of Mr.Turtle was used for White Version's J-Pop folder?
A. No.2 is the right one! Evidence is shown below.

Q3. How many different faces are there available at the notes "don" and "kat" during a song... which is caused by the increasing of combo?
A. Four different faces! No.2 is the correct answer yet again.

Ryuu to Kokuen no Himegimi (竜と黒炎の姫君) (4/6/7/8; 569 notes on Oni)

It's already past Midnight in Japan, which means that we're already getting FV footage of the latest drop/Yura Hatsuki song for Taiko gaming, now featuring both female and male vocals! The Oni notechart can be easily compared to the likes of Yuugen no Ran, in which an upbeat tempo is used to offer many combinations of 1/16 under a generally slow-feeling tempo (sans the scrolling speed-ups)

And OH YEAH, there's more...

Ryuu to Kokuen no Himegimi (竜と黒炎の姫君) (10* Ura Oni; 932 notes)

What the Taiko Team has hid from us until the latest 3DS3 song packs' release is that this song also sports a max-difficulty new Ura for the newcomer track, where instead raising the scrolling speed is actually the norm! It's also a good enough expedient to offer a playable version of this song with the oh-so-much-prized 1/12 and 1/24 cluster formation that the current Taiko generation loves to play with when it comes to hi-tier challenges in general.

Collaboration: Chain Chronicle

The second of the Taiko collaborations with Sega's ongoing mobile RPG sensation (in Japan, at least) is about to be fully operative in both fronts, with a medley of the titular Total War mode being available for all Red Version cabinets to enjoy.

Players of the CC front have something to keep their fingers busy with as well, with a Taiko no Tatsujin campaign focused on the aforementioned Total War mode and the Master of Taiko Don-Chan himself to be appearing as a recruitable Fighter companion!

Twitter Snippets (6 October 2016) - Random Composer Facts

To round up the Taiko-related updates for today, here are a couple of tweets about song composers that the Taiko Team felt compelled to re-tweet!

The first one is from the Twitter profile of Yura Hatuki, whose most recent Taiko no Tatsujin work is the 3DS3 DLC debut track Ryuu to Kokuen no Himegimi, in which she is both the lyricist and one of the singers. With this small tweet, it's revealed that recurrent Production GIW composer Hisui (翡翠) is the other singer in his first vocal job for the series!

For the second tweet, however, we're taking a glance at future song-making events, as freelance composer/singer unmo has made a photo of herself after finishing a recording session at Namco's studios in Tokyo. We haven't heard of this artist since Jikuu Chou Jikuu 1-Ka, the final song addition to Sorairo Version, which begs the question of when will be hear something more about this song, after such a huge time gap in Taiko lore!

Another week, another round of song requests! Chatbox user Yusri Khairi has a couple of Game Music-related song requests for us that cross the Limited-Play boundaries.

Unfortunately, though, video/notechart footage for one of the requested songs so far isn't available at all for the hardest difficulty setting of one of the two requests, so I'm forced for now to glance over one of the two in exchange for something else, also from the same genre...

...that said, enough with the apology time! On this corner we finally have a place to touch yet another major mobile sensation that has crossed its path with Taiko gaming for a peculiar occasion (of which we'll also talk about later, of course). Under the title translatable as 'Pull! Monster Strike!' lies the theme song of the titular Monster Strike, a game developed by mobile company Mixi who managed to dethrone mobile sensation Puzzle & Dragons in the revenue front. Co-created by Konami/Capcom designer legend Yoshiki Okamoto (岡本吉起), the game was originally launched on August 2013 for the Japanese iOS mobile market, with the Android counterpart debuting 4 months later an game localizations for North America/Korea/Taiwan occurring the year later.

This is a mobile title that follows the collectible/raising formula of many other games before it (including -again- P&D), with the main gameplay twist being the physics-related links tied with its gameplay. In short, players are in charge of a team of up to 4 different monsters that can be flung by a flick of the player's finger into a board, with the aim of bouncing directly into the enemies or the other ally monsters to unleash varying combinations of 'Bump Combo' attacks to clear the board of the enemy creatures. One big factor that has contributed pushing the game's popularity are the multiplayer features, including options for both local matches (through GPS localization with nearby players) and online matchmaking.

As anticipated, Monster Strike's success has been huge, so much so that it managed to save its social media-related company from failure! With the original game counting an estimated daily revenue of over 4 million dollars across all versions (as of June 2015 data analyses), the Monster Strike brand has expanded in the past 2 years with an official Youtube animated series (from October 2015) and a Japan-exclusive Nintendo 3DS videogame that was released on December 2015, with plans of a theathrical movie premiere for the franchise set to a December 2016 release.

The scope of this mobile game's success can be palpable even by delving into the story of its main theme, which ultimately led to the playable Taiko cut we're displaying up here. Hideki Sakamoto (坂本英城), director of the Noisycroak Co.,Ltd. sound production company, has provided the music for the original app, whose main theme has been re-arranged and lyricized in occasion of the Monster Strike app's 1-year anniversary at the Nico Nico Douga live house nicofarre, on October 24th 2014. This version of the main theme, composed and lyricized respectively by Riichiro Kuwagara (桑原理一郎) and Nagae Kuwabara (桑原永江), was released as a publicly-available single 5 days later under the name of Hippare! Monster Strike, starring none other than Anime theme voice sensation Hironobu Kageyama (影山ヒロノブ) as the singer.

Flash-forward to the month later, the Nicovideo-broadcasted show titled "New Year's Eve Final Quest" has had the Taiko no Tatsujin franchise playing quite the spotlight role across the end-year broadcast, with Taiko Team leader Etou being challenged by many different game developers and Let's Players to a Taiko match with selected songs from said developers' respective games. Monster Strike's lyricized theme was among those, leading to a six-arm match in which a hopping Etou had to play against a couple of challengers with one dedicated note kind to hit each. Seeing as only the Muzukashii mode was shown in a playable state and the song itself not being available for other kinds of public play during (or before/after) the Nicovideo broadcast, it's safe to assume that the Kantan and Futsuu modes might as well be just placeholders for the show, seeing how Hippare! Monster Strike itself has never seen the light of day in any public Taiko title yet.

For our replacement song feature, narrowing down the candidates was quite easy; today is October 8th, the eight day in the eight month (in the Julian calendar of Latin roots), so here's an 8* Oni feature fix for that, pronto! Gather around and hear the tale of Namco's very first arcade fighting title...

Released on December 1992 worldwide (early 1993 in Japan) under the Namco NA-2 board, Knuckle Heads is a tournament fighter akin to Capcom's original Street Fighter, for which this game was created by Namco as an answer to it. After picking up one of the six characters from different areas of the world, the player is called to defeat the other five opponents and fight their way to a fated match against their character's gold replica. The 2D combat game features simplistic controls in form of a jump, low attack and high attack, link-able in combinations that might lead to throws or customized charge moves through their fighter's aura. A re-release of the title was issued in August 2009 for the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console service, only in Japan. All of Knuckle Heads' music was composed by Takayuki Aihara (相原隆行), who also happens to be appearing in some other songs in Taiko lore such as the subsequent TE-20 (also from a fighting game!).

Ouburokou is quite the complex word to see at first, isn't it? Its translation stands for 'Hawk's Dance, Wolf's Howl', which also happens to be the name of the theme music for Takeshi Fujioka (タケシ・フジオカ), Knuckle Heads's Japanese fighter. As also the game's soundtrack points out, the same character song is played for the 'VS Fujioka' CPU battles, but only starting from halfaway the tune like the rest of the other 'VS' songs in the game.

This Knuckle Heads track also happens to be the subject of quite a peculiar episode that happened during the Taiko 10 arcade's launch, as former Taiko Team leader Takahashi himself has told through one of the very first Taiko Team blog entries. During the arcade pre-production meetings about the song list definition, a conversation between three Namco Bandai clerks has spread throughout the whole staff a different title for the song: Kachofugetsu (花鳥風月, lit. 'The Beauty of Nature'), which actually happens to be the name of fighter Takeshi Fujioka's unique end credits theme. When the mistake was properly addressed, the whole team has been in a hurry on modifying that portion of the title into all the already-produced cabinets, but as promotional material pre-production was already long-time concluded, it was actually possible to see promo Taiko 10 posters and pamphlets displaying the newcomer song as 'Knuckle Heads Kachofugetsu' instead.

After this troubled beginning, Ouburokou has had some slight changes to its title between Taiko games, being one single title name at first for then having the 'Ouburokou' part being the song's subtitle in Taiko games since its first console outing. Regardless of its location and later rating changes, this Knuckle Heads track is always ready to welcome Taiko players with its semi-pure 1/16 notechart made of meddling cluster trickery and stamina-based endurance.

Its Oni notecount is notable for being the same one of BLUE TOPAZ's Oni Master Route, which is another song made by Takayuki Aihara for earlier Namco games. It's also notable to mention how this was one of the few songs whose not-Oni modes (in this case, only Muzukashii) had its notechart changed for a Nintendo DS game not for housing some Denden notes but for actually offering a different-feeling chart! This Muzukashii, however, was scrapped for the later, current-generation games in favor of the original one.

The Asian song list also catches up with Japan on Chain Chronicle tie-in efforts with both past medleys and the Phoena and Pirika outfit to unlock.

Red ver. Update (V4.05/Asia V2.02) New Songs Preview

$

Players of other big-name arcade rhythm games may be familiar of makers releasing previews of new songs on YouTube. Taiko no Tatsujin has never done this except for embedding snippets with Windows Media Player in the old Namco Taiko Blog format, (in)famous for not supporting some newer advanced browsers and smartphone viewers.

That changes today, as these videos on the official Bandai Namco YouTube channel gives us the longed preview snippets of Gasshou Stabofe! and more of DokuLO CANdy♡, after that abrupt cut from that livestream.

Meanwhile for more song trivia: Gasshou Stabofe! is in fact another entry to the School Matters Series on the choir festival. The song is once again composed by long-time contributor Masako Oogami and vocaled by the Danchinomiya sisters, the combination previously seen in Yureru Pleats Jikkouiin. Active high-school female duo Tama☆tai provides their talent to make up the namesake choir.
See you tomorrow and the day after for the First Videos!

It's a Game Music bonanza with today's Red ver. update, and so is our First Video coverage! Remember to also check back tomorrow for the AOU-exclusive pick, but first...

Addendum (2016/10/14): Added Chain Chronicle Total War Medley and Gasshou Stabofe! that was missing yesterday, and DokuLO CANdy debuting today.

ミツボシ☆☆★ Mitsuboshi ☆☆★ (3/4/5/6, 456 notes on Oni)
Preppy and easy with only as complex as triples, with a requirement on processing offbeat at the 8th-note level.

 ミツボシ☆☆★ Mitsuboshi ☆☆★ (756 notes on ★9 Ura Oni)
If you did not expect the Ura Oni to be much more filled with clusters and streams, we suspect you did not see what previously came for The Idolm@ster songs. The chorus contains double-doubles (dk kd) that may be hard to pull off for new ★9 entrants, not to mention the highly-mixed streams in between.

 華蕾夢ミル狂詩曲~魂ノ導~ Tsubomi Yumemiru Rapsodia ~Alma no Michibiki~ (2/4/5/8; 765 notes on Oni)
The Nam-combo pick of the day. Also tests you to manage consecutive triples and 5-hits, in an overall stamina-draining vibe ending with one 4-4-4-4 stream to close things off.

華蕾夢ミル狂詩曲~魂ノ導~ Tsubomi Yumemiru Rapsodia ~Alma no Michibiki~ (832 notes on ★9 Ura Oni)
Even more clusters and streams is probably what you are asking for when hitting in for this Ura Oni, and it delivers. The patterns resembles the also gothic-sounding Yami no Mahou Shoujo (and straight up inherits at points near the chorus, including the iconic large notes KKKDKDK), but this has a slightly lower BPM and shorter overall and so makes for a good prelude for that.

あんずのうた Anzu no Uta (3/5/6/7; 526/484 notes on Oni)
The path forking here is a gimmicky one, with the first fork a forced Master Route, and the second fork is key to get 58 more notes in the secret Advanced Route as the score route. The ★7 is a suitable rating though, when there will be no clusters over triples if you play normally.

チェインクロニクル 総力戦メドレー Chain Chronicle Total War Medley (3/4/5/7, 425 notes on Oni)
The medley begins with pre-battle briefing BGM (in 12ths), then the main event as in-battle (mostly triples and hanging doubles), finally with the victory jingle.

チェインクロニクル 総力戦メドレー Chain Chronicle Total War Medley (635 notes on ★9 Ura Oni)
In the powered-up Ura Oni notechart, double-doubles and consecutive evens embed themselves within the flurry of clusters where 5-hits are a-plenty.

合唱スタボーフェ! Gasshou Stabofe! (4/6/6/9, 673 notes on Oni)
Basically a big choir festival performance, the notechart has with it shorted stanzas and long, highly-mixed streams to push it up to ☆9. The question remains though as what the heck is a Stabofe?

 毒LOCANdy♡ DokuLO CANdy♡ (3/4/6/9, 777 notes on Oni)
In the tamest t+pazolite composition on Taiko no Tatsujin so far, moderate speed lets you focus more on processing the abundance of 24th separations, double-doubles and offbeat placements, ending with one last long stream that is regular enough when you break it down.

Yesterday, we forgot to talk about the latest Taiko Team blog entry, which focuses on the returning Autumn Reitasai's Taiko-related content for this year.

While we already know the more meatier content thanks to the past livestream run like the limited blue Reimu Petit Chara shown above (see the rest here!), after the jump we'll be focusing of the minor new bits that have been announced with this blog entry.

About the incoming Autumn Reitasai itself, there will be a special live event where Taiko Team sister Daifuku will play together with other unexperienced donders in order to improve the game of both contestants! This 'Beginner-only' corner will take place from 12:30 a.m. for about 40 minutes.

For those who are still trying to unlock the leftover Touhou Project rewards in the ongoing, extended campaign return (which will end on November 13th), the week after this Sunday's Touhou-related convention will make players earn double the tickets for rolling in both limited gachas!

Ending the article are a couple of whited-out revelations from recurrent Touhou Project song notecharters Marimo Institute and Arihotto, whose favorite characters in Touhou lore and Petit Gacha candidates are respectively Koishi Komeiji and Suika Ibuki. The latter isn't currently available as a Petit Chara... maybe next time?

Following up from last week's appearances on Twitter, this week we've seen another couple of revelations that have been worthy of Taiko Team retweeting, and this time both of them are for commissioned future song work reveals for Taiko gaming! The first one above comes from Go Takuro (郷拓郎), one of the two members of the independent unit detune.; his latest contribution as of now is the composition of Tanqun Democracy song Natsumono☆.

Our 2nd reveal comes from the mother-and-daughter couple of Honoka and Kikuo Inoue, both of which have been hired for the creation of a future Namco Original song. While we've heard Honoka quite a lot in the genre since White Version's inception, this will be the first Namco Original starring Kikuo!

Right before our weekly song showcase, here comes from us another sneak peak at what will come from rhythm gaming in general with tomorrow's Autumn Reitasai. We've already seen that Taiko gaming will have... well... quite the un-munificient additions for this event, but what about other music gaming series?

Once again, it's only natural to assume that one of the biggest Touhou Project enthusiasts out there is Taito with the Groove Coaster series, seeing how ZUN himself worked for ZUNTATA before the shmup series' rise of popularity!

Like for the past Spring's Reitasai, among other new merchandise goods it'll be released a new soundtrack album full of "Touhou Originals" from many prominent doujin units, with the main theme being Stage 3 bosses. Save for the extra track, all of the featured songs will also be playable in the featured Groove Coaster arcade in advance from the public builds, together with a Touhou Project arrange work by former GC leader COSIO (evidence link).

(plus look at that Alice cover art I mean it's sooooo nice I want to hug the artist who drew it wwwwwwwwww)

For Sega's maimai and Chunithm series, instead, five new song additions have been shared weeks prior the incoming reitasai in the public builds, leading to the actual limited events of tomorrow. While for maimai there will be a new round of limited merchandise goods, Chunithm players attending at the incoming Touhou convention can take part in a score attack contest riddled with mystery awards!

Closing the circle for this year's musical contributors list, bemani's SOUND VOLTEX series is about to break through the even with an even bigger 2-disc Touhou Arrange soundtrack, including nearly all the fan-made Touhou Project remixes that have been made playable in the SDVX series together with some new additions (that will make their debut at the Autumn Reitasai) and long versions. From the most known doujin circles to recurrent SDVX contributors and occasional submission contest winners, it's a feast for everyone to enjoy!

While the latest Red Version update has brought up a quintet of brand-new public songs, the license expiration death knell has required four times the amount of song removals to be satisfied this time around, including -once again- songs that don't have any other playable form in any other Taiko title.

Today's feature is in memory of two of these forever-lost tracks...

Our first eulogy goes to the ending theme of the first Anime season for the pen-named Torako's ongoing light novel series Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! (中二病でも恋がしたい!, lit. 'Even with Eighth Grader Syndrome, I Want to Be in Love'). Its story revolves around Yuta Togashi, a boy who spent his junior high school years under a delusional phase, believing to be secretly holding superpowers as the 'Dark Flame Masters' while alienating the attention of his former classmates. Ashamed from his chūnibyō past, he hopes to head into high school as a means for a fresh start from his former self, but when this new school cycle has begun, his past might start creeping back as one of his new classmates -a delusional girl called Rikka Takanashi- becomes interested of Yuta upon hearing stories of his junior high years...

Drawn by Nozomi Osaka, this light novel's first volume made its debut as a contest entry for the Kyoto Animation Award's 2010 edition, ultimately being awarded of an honorable mention in the novel category. Kyoto Animation itself became the series' light novel publisher, counting 3 books as of March 2014 and a couple of animated series, both beginning as Youtube 'lite' versions at first before having a couple of full-length, 12-episodes series, topped off with a movie on September 2013 and an OVA one year later in the same month. Western audiences have come to know this series thatnks to the efforts of Sentai Filmworks, a company which has localized both series with English subtitles in 2014 and actual English-dubbed episodes with the boxed releases of February 2015, with the series itself going under the localized name of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions.

For all of Chu-2's musical themes, the Japanese singer-songwriter ZAQ from the Lantis label has single-handedly composed and lyricised all of the main themes, with INSIDE IDENTITY, being sung by the fictional unit known as Black Raison d'être. As many others in Anime territory before and after it, under this unit name lie the dubbers of many  of the show's characters, with Black Raison d'être being made of Maaya Uchida (内田真礼) as Rikka Takanashi, Chinatsu Akasaki (赤﨑千夏) as cheerleader Shinka Nibutani, Azumi Asakura (浅倉杏美) and Sumire Uesaka (上坂すみれ) for a couple of Anime-debut characters (respectively Kumin Tsuyuri and Sanae Dekomori). With INSIDE IDENTITY getting a permanent cut from the series, Maaya Uchida as a singing role managed to 'survive' in Taiko gaming with the release of the Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls song Tsubomi Yumemiru Rapsodia ~Alma no Michibiki~, which was released this very week in conjunction with the aforementioned 20-song arcade purge.

What was inside this song's Oni mode is an upbeat speedy track whose successions of Big note-monocolor have been quite the puzzle for arcade players in order to deliver drum hits with the proper energy to fully hit big notes while not being mislead by the succeeding note triplet and color variation.

For our second pick we have an even sadder case of song removal, as this particular tune has survived only an arcade version change overall, being unavailable to all arcades since last Thursday!

This is one of the (so far) four tunes featured on Taiko gaming about the Love Live! (ラブライブ!) multimedia project. Also known with the English subtitle of School Idol Project, this is a six-hand collaboration between bishoujo pubblication Dengeki G's Magazine, music label Lantis and animation studio Sunrise in the aim to kickstart the musical adventures of a fictional group of school girls who form an unit in order to prevent their academy to shut down. The project starts when bandleader Honoka Kosaka gets the idea of an idol unit upon seeing another school idol unit gaining a huge following, ultimately leading to the formation of the 9-girl unit μ's (read as 'muse'), which is also credited on Taiko games as the currently-released songs' artists in the original subtitle.

The original story pitch was made for the August 2010 issue of Dengeki G's Magazine by Sakurako Kimino, with drawings by Yuhei Morota and a slew of subsequent polls to let the magazine's readers to decide a lot of performing aspects of this newly-forming band, from character names/hairstyles to stage performance positions and up to the name of the main unit and three sub-units, with musical creations from the School Idol Project being gradually released as both singles and Audio CDs between 2010 and early 2016. Alongside the musical side, Love Live-related media has also sprung in different directions along the years, including an Anime series (from which Snow halation comes from), two manga adaptation, an OVA, a movie, radio broadcasts and two videogames, the most recent of which -the 2014 PS Vita rhythm game Love Live! School Idol Paradise- is also providing the song cut of Snow halation that could be heard on Taiko. This multimedia project's impact was so successful to warrant the Anime series an award as best Anime in the 19th Animation Kobe Awards and a spin-off multimedia project titled Love Live! Sunshine!!, which ran over the course of 2016.

Snow halation is sung by all of the μ's girls, while the song basis has come to be due to the talent of three extra artists: Aki Hata (畑亜貴) as the lyricist, Takahiro Yamada (山田高弘) as the composer and Ryosuke Nakanishi (中西亮輔) as themain arranger. Together with Angelic Angel's debut on White Version, Snow halation's debut was shortly followed by its own dedicated set of custom dancers as part of a Love Live! collaboration campaign with Taiko arcades.

For another mid-speed Anime pick, this song's Oni rating sits in the 6-star group due to its clusters not being bigger than 3 notes and its patterns in general not being exceedingly different from other songs in the same rating ballpark.

As this week's Red Version update went live, the Android version of the game can effectively catch up with all the Chain Chronicle content, as both the previously-launched Normal Battle and Final Battle medleys have been added to the Gakkyoku Tori Houdai mode, together with the shared debut of newcomer ChainChronicle Total War Medley and the three songs' respective Ura Oni modes.

On top of that, the short version of the Chain Chronicle Normal Battle Medley will become available to play once again on both app versions for free, until the campaign's end (November 14th).

No matter though all in the good fun for the anniversary, and we just listed everyone's results with adjusted maximums this time. We'll make sure we make the rules clearer the next time we hold something like this.

All in all though, thanks once again for the continued support, and here's to more years of both Taiko no Tatsujin and the blog!

NB. Other 616-note Onis would not have worked because: (1) GERMINATION has a star cut on Oni in iOS (hence should have two rows); (2) Senpuu no Mai [Heaven] has a Sou-uchi/Double Play Oni notechart and a star cut in Futsuu (and it has three rows), and (3) Daidara 8551 Muzukashii has 455 notes not 3xx.

(2) "Thank god you're back! I can't find anything last year and was in such a pickle! The last time I stumbled upon one of those Series pages but I forgot which exactly. What I do remember is that:
  • more than half of the songs have English letters in them, but not all the songs do
  • among all the latest Oni ratings, there are more 8s than 7s, and more 9s than 10s
  • at least one song from the series appeared in 9 out of the 10 arcade firmware versions.
Oh no I gotta go now, so just tell me how many 5-star ratings are among the latest ratings, Thanks!"

Ans.: The Song Series Showcase in question is Taito video game songs with:
  • 13 out of 14 has English letters in the title; Kage no Densetsu (影の伝説) is the exception
  • there are one ★7, five ★8, six ★9 and three ★10 current Oni ratings.
  • the 10 last firmwares would be AC13, AC14 and all eight AC0 builds, but there are no Taito songs in AC14.
Counting all the songs should give you seven current 5-star ratings (DADDY MULK Futsuu, CAPTAIN NEO Kantan, PENETRATION Kantan and Futsuu, Extreme MGG★★★ Oni (regular), FUJIN Rumble Kantan and Good-bye my earth Futsuu).

(3) Sympho-Neighbours and Sonority Scouts are new this year! Name four music/rhythm games that do not share any song with any Taiko no Tatsujin game ever.
Ans.: Some examples that we have came up are Deemo, VOEZ, Dynamix, Rhythm Heaven (series) and Rhythm Thief R.
NB. Thanks to Game Music Triangle and multiple Tenkaichi Otogesai, original songs has been passed around arcade scenes. Plus popular tunes like most J-POP and Anime and conflict also took out a lot of the remaining.

(4a) Assume you live in the Saitama region, and one arcade center near your residence (i.e. you can walk there and not have to pay for travelling) has AC0 cabinets that runs on 100 yen for 3-song credits and Tokkun Mode at 290 Banacoins extra. Assume you also have all of Wii U, 3DS and PS Vita consoles but you do not have any of the Taiko games. What is the highest number of times you can play Yuugen no Ran on those AC0, for the same money you would need to buy the cheapest access to Yuugen no Ran on any one console?

Ans.: Yuugen no Ran can be found on three consoles:
  • 3DS3 DLC: (4800 yen + free DLC before Aug. 31) +8% tax = 5184 yen (best)
  • Wii U3 hidden: 5300 yen +8% tax = 5724 yen
  • Vita1 DLC: (5690 yen + 500 yen) +8% tax = 6685 yen
And on the arcade you can either play normal Performance Game or Tokkun Mode:
  • Performance Game: 100 yen for 3 times (best)
  • Tokkun Mode: (290 Banacoins + 100 yen) for (8 min. / 2 min.)+1 time
    = 413 yen for 5 times
So in total you can play (5184 yen / 100 yen) x 3 = 153 times (you can't play with the odd 84 yen). If you specify after the free 3DS3 DLC campaign, then you should get 171 times instead.

(4b) Now assume you live in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong and is close to Namco Wonder Park Plus in World Trade Centre, and the same prices apply (except Hong Kong does not have Tokkun Mode), what is the maximum number of times here then?

Ans.: Trick question! That Namco Wonder Park Plus location has been closed for more than 3 years now, and AC0 has not got to Hong Kong at that time. :(

(5) Name two songs featured in videos that went viral in a "look at this guy playing Taiko in this awesome/crazy manner" fashion.

Ans.: In addition to Saitama 2000 and Angel Dream by the "dude who rocks out on Taiko", there is also Yawaraka Sensha played by both "God of Akihabara" (blindfolded, back-facing and Doron) and sumo wrestler Sho Tanikawayama. The "God of Akihabara" also previously played Memeshikute and DON'T CUT with one man playing both sides of a 2-player session.

(6) All but one out of the following J-POP and Anime genre songs have/had been subject to copyright takedowns or muting in relation to Taiko no Tatsujin. Choose the one song that has been takedown-free.

Ans.: Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari. There have been consistent reports of Taiko no Tatsujin gameplay videos of Telecastic fake show, ANTI-HERO, PON PON PON and Ikenai Borderline being muted on YouTube. Blue Bird here is calling back to our Naruto: Shippuden series being taken down in collateral damage of a DMCA action against illegal anime distributors (okay this is going to one of the last times we talk about this).
