Song of the Week! 17 September 2016

This week it was revealed that the Taiko Team is holding a couple of week-long Twitter campaigns for the next livestream session, with the latter of the couple, #譜面ジャー組み合わせ (lit. '#MusicSentaiCombination'), being about a poll to decide which among three recurrent notecharters in Taiko games will get to collaborate for a future forked-path song.

While I'm still not that much versed on frequently using Twitter, I might as well join the voting fun by having my pick as our latest Song of the Week feature! ...will the vote count this way, too?

 Donut Hole (ドーナツホール) Kenshi Yonezu
Version
Allx4 (219)x6 (326)x7 (495)x8 (732)
 Taiko Ps Vita
 252
 none
 donuts

Personally-speaking, if there's a reason behind me occasionally booting up the first Taiko game for the Playstation Vita, 8 times out of 10 will be just for re-playing this Variety track by the hands of Vocaloid producer Kenshi 'hachi' Yonezu (米津玄師), of which we already talked about on these lines a few years back for one of our end-of-the-year special features.

At first, Donut Hole made its debut on the Internet as a Vocaloid song on October 28th, 2013 starring Megpoid GUMI as its digital singer, almost three years after his last Vocaloid hit Panda Hero. With Yu Suto at the bass and Masaki Hori as the drummer, Hachi's 19th single made it to become the closing track of the artist's second studio album: April 2014's Yankee, the second in his discography which only stars songs that are both performed and sung by Yonezu himself, rather than using Vocaloid voices. To give out an additional piece of trivia, the same album also stars a track called Hyakki Yakou (百鬼夜行), which -bare in mind- isn't the same Hyakki Yakou featured in Taiko gaming by Kagumi Nishikomi!

Both the original Donut Hole with Vocaloid singing and the "artist-sung" version of the song share the same lyrics and topic, telling the tale of a girl that spats out some random gibberish in her attempts to remember the name of a person she saw in the past. Despite of the GUMI version piling over 10 million views combined between NicoNicoDouga and Youtube, the playable Taiko cut comes from the Kenshi Yonezu version that comes from the self-published album.

By doubling the original song's base BPM, Donut Hole's Taiko incarnation manages to become the current song with the highest base BPM of the Variety genre, trumping Oshiri no Yama wa Everest Ura's BPM value of 236. The notecharts by Shika@ni~San (しか@に~さん) make the catchy tune to be played with an higher care due to the high note count and occasional 1/16 clusters that still aren't close to become brutally-difficult spike traps to make some cheap hit misses, while also squeezing in some Soflan magic to lower and rise the scrolling speed half-away through the play by x0.5 and x1.5 times the regular speed respectively.

If you haven't already done it, check out the updates we did yesterday for the School Matters and God Collection song series showcases, now featuring Houkago☆Magician and VICTORIA!

For some more fresh updates, however, today we've added Abandoned Temple Final 2nd to the Tekken showcase!

Taiko no Tatsujin Red Ver. (International) Song List

After a long, long wait, Taiko no Tatsujin in Asia seems to have finally almost caught up with the Japanese release! No, no Donder Hiroba yet, but in terms of new content, Red Version (Asia) has an almost 1:1 match with its Japanese brethren, including all new songs from Day 1 save one licensed song, and with an early song update that came at the same day as the JP version too, which is quite impressive. Loads of old songs previously never available for Asia have been released too.

Asian Red is also the first time the Don Point system has been reset for the region; all previous songs in the point chain have been unlocked by default for all players. Smart fixes to the user interface mirror that of the JP release; separating costume select from diving straight into the game, and putting exit signs every five or six songs on folder select (for players who find it more intuitive than hitting right kat -> left kat).

Sympho-Neighbours - An Ode to Endless Oblivion

Once again, a song removal announcement for the currently-running line of Taiko arcades can mean the definitive end for a selection of tracks to be playable in any Taiko no Tatsujin-related media ever released to date (with a few exceptions), unlike being framed in their cabinet version forever with the past numbered arcade titles.

That being said, acts of definitive banishment from a music series are far from new, as many music game franchises in both past and present times are performing this kind of stunt from time to time! Here's a selection of some of the most prominent tales of forever-gone songs in other music series.

Starting from the third-numbered arcade in the long-running beatmania IIDX series (and even earlier for the beatmania series since its 3rd arcade release), the announcement for a new entry in bemani's first rhythm game franchise is automatically followed by a selection of original songs removals from its catalogue of original compositions. While it's true that any kind of arcade removal for the series isn't a definitive one (most of the times) and that the almost entirety of song list can still be entirely picked up by playing either one of the many PlayStation 2 ports or 2015's subscription-based PC title beatmania IIDX INFINITAS, the more recent songs that got the axe from IIDX 17 onward are staying removed from any other entry of the series, until the occurrence of selected track revivals.

Up here is beatmania IIDX 21 SPADA's dubstep track WOBBLE IMPACT by Sota Fujimori (藤森崇多), which has been reported to become one of the future removals for the launch of the next IIDX installment, which (at the time of this writing) is IIDX 24 SINOBUZ.

Some removals at bemani's, however, are more inclined to become a truly-permanent sentence and there's no bigger example than the collection of songs made for the pop'n music franchise by Atsushi Shindo (新堂敦士).

Born in Osaka, the artist has been employed by Konami's music-related division for five years until 2004, when the artist was publicly accused of plagiarizing his songs' lyrics from pre-existing tracks from other Japanese composers/units, such as hide, BUMP OF CHICKEN and Mr.Children; in this Japanese website, one user has documented the lyrics similarities that were tied in with his and other songs. When the scandal went public, Konami removed all of Shindo's songs from all subsequent pop'n music arcade models, including a location test song called Eros that was supposed to be released with the 11th installment.

Up there is Shindo's first pop'n music song -as well as first in his Power Folk song series- called Nanka hen Da! (なんか変だ!), whose lyrics were seemingly found out to be ripped off from the song Shameless (ハレンチ) by Yasuyuki Okamura (岡村靖幸).

Several times in the past, we've seen how multiple music game franchises managed to grab selected licensed tunes, but in some cases the licenses cases were dropped at different times!

Talking about Taiko no Tatsujin and bemani series, one license that left the arcade rooms before the Taiko one is Perfume's Polyrhythm, whose port for the beatmania IIDX series was specifically arranged by Perfume producer Yasutaka Nakata (中田 ヤスタカ), under the nickname of Pink Lemonade. Once a staple in the DanceDanceRevolution series, the song was removed from the arcade scene with the release of the currently-latest installment, DanceDanceRevolution A.

This cover was also featured in the pop'n music series since 17 THE MOVIE (link), but it got the boot years earlier, since the release of pop'n music sunny park.

For a little taste of the reversed scenario, here's a licensed pick that left Taiko arcades forever but it's still playable in other rhythm game series! Surviving the Taiko AC purge, GRANRODEO's The Other Self still lives on with the maimai series, returning for its latest installment as well (maimai PiNK PLUS), coupled with a portion of the official music video for the song itself.

Delete-Until-Further-Notice song removals is also a thing for external companies, with one of the currently-banished original tracks being the hip hop track One Night, performed by the South Korean trio DJ DOC for the Pump it Up series.

We wrap thing up for this feature with a case of eternal removal that involves the Groove Coaster 3 Link Fever unlockable launch song Arkanoid Vs Invaders, ...but this time around, it's not the song itself the one which got the eternal banishment treatment!

This track is actually a medley of songs that are featured in a Taito mobile game linked to the chat program LINE, whose name is nearly the same one of the medley: LINE Arkanoid Vs Invaders (LINE アルカノイドvsインベーダー). The title mixed style and gameplay elements from both the Arkanoid and Space Invaders series, as players are called up in command of the VAUS spaceship to defeat a new generation of Invaders by deflecting their attacks and answering the enemy fire with temporary VAUS ball assaults. Much like for a certain Bandai Namco app, however, the title is going to be discontinued soon, as its servers will shut down by the end of this month.

The only traces of this LINE app that will remain after its passing will be the game itself's score and related soundtrack album -composed by Hirokazu 'COSIO' Koshio- and this song to live on in both the arcade and mobile versions of the Groove Coaster series...

While, as we said, Taiko no Tatsujin is not having much to go on in this year's Tokyo Game Show, staying tuned to the Sega Booth mainly to look at Puyos originally turned out to be fruitful because Sega's mobile RPG-turned franchise plans for another collaboration.

This time around, Don-chan will be more than just a weapon and be available as a full-blown character for you to do (whatever you do in Chain Chronicle). On the Taiko no Tatsujin front, AC0 Red ver. and iOS/Android Plus STH will feature new Chain Chronicle music to play to. The two-way collaboration will come in about Autumn 2016.

Pre-livestream, slow news days for the Taiko front isn't that new of a phenomenon and as an enforcer of that statement, the only story-related content we can offer you as of now is an announcement... of future announcements.

To be more precise, the Taiko Team will host yet another Touhou Project-related event in occasion for the incoming Autumn edition of the Hakurei Shrine Reitasai convention for everything Touhou, with the full details being revealed during the Sep 30th livestream run (of which the broadcast link is also supplied above!).

For the sake of completion, we also leave you with a direct link for the Autumn Reitasai's other gaming-related events, with the appearance -among others- of other software companies (namely Konami and Sega) attending the event with their music series for free plays/exclusive songs and Taito's returning Groove Coaster series with a brand new soundtrack album being purchasable during the event.

Song of the Week! 24 September 2016

For this week's feature, you're about to hear the very same song twice! (... kinda...sorta... not really)

In order of Taiko appearance, this console-exclusive Variety pick comes first, being also the closest rendition to the original source material from which this and the next song are coming from.

With the name Oklahoma Mixer, we're referring to a popular song/dance combination that has become popular in the Southern United states (and later on in Japan) starting from the late 40ies. Taught first by Reverend Larry Eisenberg at the Pacific Recreation Laboratory School in Asilowar, California, this dance was originally known as the Texas Schottische and became popular for one of the many kind of dances that involved people of opposite sexes dancing together in a 4/4 rhythm, under the notes of American folk song Turkey in the Straw, whose origins are commonly appointed with the debut of the American ballad 'My Grandmother Lived on Yonder Little Green'. The Oklahoma Mixer got its more-known name by American music teacher Henry "Buzz" Glass, who learnt the dance from Larry Eisenberg in Norman, one of the cities in Oklahoma.

The Taiko rendition of the popular song/dance combo closely follows the original version, up to its ending which is instead coming from another piece of American pop culture: the Shave and a Haircut jingle. Originated from the 1899 song 'At a Darktown Cakewalk' by Charles Dale, this riff refers to the response that a barber in the song gives to a customer asking for a shave and a haircut, retorting with 'two bits', an archaism for 25 cents in old American money value. Nowadays, this 7-note jingle is mostly intended in everyday occurrences and media in general as a comic relief-y finishing touch to a call or a song/scene with national variations for the same comedic meaning (often with different contexts from the original barber scenario) for countries such as England, Italy and Spain, while also being used for highly-offensive purposes in Mexico instead!

Very true to the Oklahoma Mixer's country nature, the song's notecharts follow the swing vibes with 1/12 and 1/24 cluster formations, often resulting in a note density which matches the commonplace 1/16 clusters density in faster songs like Black Rose Apostle. Not to shabby for a 6* Oni, isn't it? Being a tune from the Ps2 era, the Oklahoma Mixer also comes with a forked-path Muzukashii chart and 2P charts for all modes where the notecounts are the same but the ceiling score for player 2 is slightly higher due to the presence of Yam notes.

 Minna ga Minna Eiyuu (みんながみんな英雄)

Fast-forward to more current times, Turkey in the Straw and the Oklahoma Mixer dance as a whole have received a new coat of musical paint for the Japanese audience, as the popular American folk song has been the basis for the second of the CM songs featured in au's Santaro (三太郎, lit. 'Three Taros') commercial series.

Being broadcast on au's online music store LIZMO on January 5th, 2016 and distributed for purchase on Jaunary 18th of the same year, Minna ga Minna Eiyuu (lit. 'Everyone is Everyone's Hero') is the work of love from born-American Japanese singer/songwriter Ai Carina Uemura (植村 愛 カリーナ) who is simply known in the musical scene as either Ai or AI (in full caps). Born in November 2, 1981, she spent her childhood between the American city and the Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima, both of which have helped the artist to create her own musical style. Ai's musical debut is dated to the year 2000, boasting (as of now) a never-interrupted musical career which currently consists of 10 albums, dozens of singles and a number of award nominations for song/music video contests such as Space Station and MTV Japan's.

For her contribution to the Santaro CM series, Ai has composed and sung a track that she herself was really fond to listen to in her American-influenced childhood, now modernized by a series of lyrics that have been written by Japanese composer Makoto Shinohara (篠原眞). Originally a 100-seconds song, its high launch popularity on music services such as iTunes has made a fruitful occasion for the song to be physically released in a longer version the month later.

Charted for Taiko games by Sasaoka (ササオカ), the playable cut for this CM-spawn song barely passes the 1-minute mark, but its Oni mode makes it to the modern 6* status thanks to a note-packed chart mostly made of 1/16 cluster rhythms, in stark contrast with the earlier-released Oklahoma Mixer's 1/12 and 1/124 charting.

Namco Taiko Blog (September 26 2016): The Fun Never Ends with Don-chan and Puzzles

$

If you did not know, the BNEI Japan headquarters (Future Lab) has long since moved from the old site near Aomono-yokochou Station for over half a year already. Now that they are here at Minato's Shiba/Mita area (芝三田エリア), the company will be starting a tie-in event with shops in the nearby Keiounaka-toori Shopping Street (慶応仲通り商店街), with Don-chan as the poster model.

The Fun Never Ends: the Shiba/Mita Puzzles (アソビきれない 芝三田なぞなぞ) is named to the company philosophy of "For Everyday Where Fun Never Ends" (アソビきれない毎日を。) and Part 2 of the company's Asobi Motto campaign, started this Summer with this video. Starting tonight (September 26), the 12 participating shops in the district will give out drink coasters to patrons, each containing one of 10 puzzles. Tell your server the correct answer and get one pack of Don-chan design wet tissues. The event is until the stock of 3900 prizes across all stores (oh Namco you and your goroawase gratitude) lasts.

Bonus fact: this design for Don-chan is called the Shiba/Mita Ban-Nam Don (芝三田バンナムどん). Look at the Bandai Namco corporate colors on the happi coat!

Consider it the equivalency exchange for having so many Same day as Japan additions or whatever, but the October 13 AC0 Red ver. removals, dubbed the "Red Purge" by us, will also happen in the greater Asian regions. Given not all of the 20 removals in Japan have got out to Asia in the first place, so we only have 11 songs be removed. Yay...? The list is after the jump.

Well, at least Shining 65 hits the greater Asian arcades on schedule today (October 1) too, as the after-DonChare general unlocking.

This week's feature comes from a suggestion in the chatbox, highlighting a pretty big kid's anime which we actually haven't talked about much until now.

Sanrio has had a long history of creating animated series from its large repertoire of cutesy characters, all of which have become media franchises of their own. There's the Hello Kitty anime, there's Onegai My Melody, and there's this; Jewelpets. The original media franchise is a collab between Sanrio and Sega Sammy, based on tiny cute furry creatures which are born from jewels and grow up to become magicians, with the help of human partners. Merchandise for Jewelpets are the usual stuff you'd see from Sanrio; home-use items, stationery and others, and there are several, each named after a jewel. Which Jewelpet is your favorite?

The anime series closely follows the original theme and has been Sanrio's longest-running anime series to date, after Onegai My Melody was retired. There are several seasons (Jewelpet, Twinkle, Sunshine, Kira Deco and Happiness), some more focused on the story of defeating dark magical forces, some more comedy-based, to give a veeeeery rough overview. Zutto Zutto Tomodachi was an opening theme for the fourth season, Kira Deco, which ran from 2012 to 2013 and had quite a lighthearted story of humans going to Jewel Land to search for artifacts called Deco Stones.

Zutto Zutto Tomodachi is the ending theme to Kira Deco and was sung by child actress Mana Ashida (who turns 12 this year as of this time of writing!). Even if you haven't heard of her before, if you've played any Taiko game during the 10th anniversary, you would have heard her sing; Maru Maru Mori Mori was literally everywhere! Mana-chan rose to fame starring in a Japanese television drama, and started singing after her involvement in Marumo no Okite (which produced said song mentioned above).

One remarkable thing about Zutto Zutto Tomodachi's simplistic 4* Oni chart is that it has the exact same BPM, difficulty level and total combo as Best Wishes!, the opening theme for Pokemon B/W which was also trending at the same time.

Thanks to a heads-up by chatbox user Faiz Danyal, we've been made aware of a skilled Taiko player's recorded performance on the Dojo Ranking's hardest trial yet, scoring an impressive Tatsujin Gold clear (=all Great hits, no misses) in the dreadful Souryuu no Ran/≠MM/Yuugen no Ran trial. Congratulations!

Waiting impatiently at the far side of the twisted karma
Adorned this very body is with red blood darker than anyone's ever

Dance now, scarlet heart, cheating eternity
To the uncontained rhythm of a gloomy rondeau
Spin now, round and round, snickering at the sun
Those lips are too contorted as is

Pierce now, scarlet heart, the time has come
An intense requiem into this sunset
Just like a beating scarlet heart, Sing now your last words
The curtains to the stage of the end has opened, ah

    Tenkaichi Otogesai 3 Postcards

While we're redacting our recap of the proper past Taiko Team livestream run, here's a fresh feature about the one that was broadcasted a few hours ago, concerning the returning Tenkaichi Otogesai cross-over tournament and the songs that will be involved.

As usual, we're going to focus more on the Taiko no Tatsujin part while also including some tidbits about the other rhythm game families!

Starting from the tournament's schedule, it will be structured like the past 2 editions before it, by following the Preliminaries-Area Elimination-Finals structure. The three phases will occur respectively on November 19th, December 19th (2016) and February 11th next year, with the Finals being hosted by the returning JAEPO fair over the course of 3 days.

For this edition (as we've previously heard in the past), one of the new songs will be a brand-new inclusion to the event while the other is crossed over between one of the companies involved in the Tenkaichi Otogesai tournament across the tracks made for the edition of the past year.

This round of guest songs, in particular, will take place in November (on AOU arcades only) and will see at least one song per company being crossed over to another music series, with the involved songs being decided by a draw that happened later in this very same livestream.

Starting the fair is Konami's bemani branch, with SOUND VOLTEX unveiling their new track with an extended jacket art above from the new song: Kyokuken (極圏, lit. polar circle, pronounciation guide by Konami promo), by cosMo (as in cosMo@暴走P/CosMo@BousouP) and bemani gaming's dj TAKA. As you can see, both characters from the 2nd Tenkaichi Otogesai SDVX image songs will be back for the tourney fun!

For Sega's maimai series we have quite the treat, as the instrumental track known as Nitrous Fury will be lead by in-house guitarist Jun Senoue, who overseas Sonic fans might know him better as the lyricist and lead guitarist of the recurrent Crush 40 band.

Groove Coaster gaming's track is quite notable as well, seeing that the also-full-instrumental song Scarlet Lance is the 2nd track made by ZUNTATA member and current Groove Coaster series director MASAKI since his inclusion into Taiko's in-house musician unit.

As you can see by these pictures' posting order, the Taiko portion was -indeed- the last one! As for the other companies it started with a brief presentation to explain to the stream's viewers what the series is about in a nutshell.

...in which is revealed that Peppa Pig is now canon in the Taiko no Tatsujin universe?

All the preparation has lead to the shocking revelation that Taiko gaming's latest Tenkaichi Otogesai song is actually t+pazolite's Doku L0CANdy♡ (毒L0CANdy♡), thus making it the earliest reveal of them all. Who would have thought it?

Below are also some portions of the Oni mode notechart, in a growing escalation of notes and clusters, and notes in clusters! Please note that the combo chain was broken in different points to preserve the surprise factor.

Just like the other Tenkaichi Otogesai newcomer songs, Doku L0CANdy♡ will appear in the AOU arcades' Red Version Taiko cabinets on October 14th, with the public release presumibly set after the third Tenkaichi Otogesai's ending.

After a small break, there has been a mystery draw for the guest hosts, in order to decide which of the 2nd Tenkaichi's songs will reach out foreign franchises next November. For Taiko no Tatsujin's case, the transplanted song will be REDALiCE's Masakari Blade (マサカリブレイド), from SOUND VOLTEX.

For what concerns the other franchises, Groove Coaster will get AcuticNotes's Axeria, SOUND VOLTEX will receive xi's Solar Storm and maimai will receive Taku Inoue's Yoake Made Ato 3-byou from Synchronica.

Closing the broadcast is the communication that the game music ranking for each of the participating franchises in this tourney will have dedicated livestream broadcasts for their respective partial results, with Taiko no Tatsujin's livestream airing on November 14th this year.

See you in about two weeks for this event's actual beginning!
