Game Music Showcase: Puzzle & Dragons

Developed by GungHo Online Entertainement, the original Puzzle & Dragons game is an hybrid RPG/match-three puzzle game for both iOS and Android, originally released in Japan on February 20th, 2012 as an Android exclusive with ports for multiple devices and geographical areas in the subsequent years. In this game, the action is divided into the two vertical halves of the screen, with the lower half being made up of colored jewels; players drag one of them around to form same-color rows or columns to defeat the monsters in the upper screen by using the elemental attacks of the player's very own team of creatures. You get to recruit the monsters encountered by either receiving their eggs as dungeon drops or as prizes of the game's gacha machine system, and can be raised/evolved through different material-collection tasks, as a staple to the mobile gacha game genre.

The game is currently among the highest-grossing iOS and Android applications in the world, with 16 million downloads in Japan only and a monthly revenue between 62 and 84 million dollars, making GungHo quite the financial juggernaut to be reckoned with! As for any other gaming success story, many alternate titles and spin-offs have been paired with the (still running) original app, including 2014's arcade puzzle title Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament (パズドラ バトルトーナメント), a 2015 trading card game and three different titles for the Nintendo 3DS.

One of the defining traits of this long-lasting mobile sensation is the franchise's open-minded set to host a number of cross-over events and collaboration with many different franchises and brands embracing both Japanese culture and the West! The Taiko no Tatsujin series has been one of the very first supporters of the collaboration fanfare, leading to a number of special occasions in which titlkes from both series could enjoy some promotional content. For the Taiko series' case, this more than often resulted in the sharing of many of the fan-dubbed 'Pazudora' series's collective soundtrack.

Once simply known as Puzzle & Dragons (Boss Song) on Taiko iOS fields, Walking Through The Towers is one of the very first BGM tunes of Puzzle & Dragons's original mobile version, which is nowadays used for a wide share of boss battles (mostly Normal dungeons). Like for the other songs in the original app, Walking Through The Towers is composed by Kenji Ito (伊藤賢治) and Yukio Nakashima (中嶋教雄); the former artist is a well-known freelance composer whose earlier works include early Square games, while the latter is loyal to GungHo. In rhythm gaming, it's also possible to spot the song in Taito's Groove Coaster series, both on mobile and arcades!

On the topic of official soundtracks, Kenji Ito released an iTunes album with music from the game, under the 'itoken' alias on May 2013; the album is titled Puzzle & Dragons Original Soundtrack -itoken limited- and includes both the first original tracks and three remixed pieces created together with a couple of Namco-related composers: Denji Sano (Taiko Time, Boku wa Shinse) and Kouta Takahashi (music for Ridge Racer games). Another remix of the iconic boss track, made by ex-ZUNTATA member Hirokazu 'COSIO' Koshio, was made in commemoration to the first collaboration event between Pazudora and Groove Coaster, with said remix being played both in the promotional P&D dungeon and on the very same rhythm game series as well (link)!

The journey of Walking Through The Towers in Taiko has been a really rocky one along the years: after a Taiko no Tatsujin + limited campaign in 2012 with a generic song name (the song was officially untitled before 2013), another Taiko + event in the following year rebranded the song with its definitive title and added dancers to it. The release of the PazuDora pack means that it was no longer limited on the smartphone Taiko. A similar destiny to his song occured for the arcade scene: after being playable only in the aforementioned Pazudora Fan Thanksgiving 2013 celebration, Walking Through The Towers became a default GM track after one of Sorairo Version's last software updates.

Gameplay-wise, Walking Through The Towers perfectly fits the place of a 7* Oni challenge with an average BPM value and several special notes along the chart. Later outings of this song outside of its Taiko debut as the 'Puzzle & Dragons (Boss Song)' would see some of the most known monster families in the game as custom dancers, like the evolution Spirits (on top), the Starter Dragons (as the main five dancers), and the Slimes and the Metal Dragons, both appearing when the Spirit Gauge is filled to the max. Each subsequent song from the P&D app uses the same custom dancers setup as well!

After Walking Through The Towers, the majority of the subsequent Puzzle & Dragons songs in Taiko have made a name of themselves for being exclusive to the console grounds, starting with another couple of the original app's tracks which were composed -once again- by the hands of Kenji Ito (伊藤賢治) and Yukio Nakashima (中嶋教雄).

A New Journey is the overture theme for the Technical Dungeons, a particular kind of dungeon in the game where the enemy monsters can either attack normally or use one of their special abilities to perform even more powerful attacks or applying several kind of buffs and debuffs, both on themselves and/or on the player. The BGM's title was thought up by Kenji Ito to match the title chosen for one of the first non-limited Technical Dungeon's trials ("New Journey", from the Fertile Land dungeon set). This was one of the three songs that made up the original publishing of Taiko Plus's Pazudora Pack, as well as being one of the three iOS-exclusive picks from the series.

Despite being slower than the older P&D song, A New Journey still proves to be suitable to the modern 7* Oni rating, thanks to the many combinations of small 1/16 clusters being used. The cut used on Taiko is slightly shorter than the one in the original game. A different cut of this song to be played with is also featured in the Groove Coaster series, once again thanks to some collaboration magic!

While Walking Through The Towers is the boss theme for the Normal Dungeons, The Orb Festival is the theme used for the boss battles in Technical Dungeons. Both this track and A New Journey are also used in an additional kind of dungeons in the game (the Conditional Dungeons), where only certain monsters can be used or different conditions have to be respected in order to try them, such as having all monsters of a certain attribute, running a dungeon without using high-cost monsters or certain skills and so on. Enemy monsters can also use their special abilities, just like in the Technical Dungeons.

With stamina-unfriendly cluster segments and long combination of notes, The Orb Festival definitely proves to the hardest PAD song of the original trilogy for the "early-stage" Pazudora Pack. Muck like the two previously-featured songs, it's also playable in Groove Coaster, no less!

Some of the Pazudora tracks in Taiko gaming are coming from some of the series's many console spin-offs; such is the case for Sakasama Sekai, being the theme song for the 3DS videogame Puzzle & Dragons Z (パズドラZ).

Released in Japan on December 12th, 2013, P&D Z is the first game for the series to be set in an actual story against the original iOs/Android app's approach. In the game's world, people and dragons are able to co-exist thanks to the power of the mystical Drops. However, the sinister organization Paradox wants to break the power balance for their own schemes; it's up to the player, as one of the world's Dragon Tamers, to foil their plans, with the help of the mysterious dragon Syrup.

While Z's puzzle game approach is basically the same of the original mobile app, the game is branched to be like a proper, Pokémon-styled RPG, with player-input attacks (through orb combinations) and many collectible monsters to get and train. The positive reception of the game in Japan (over 1.5 million copies sold as of June '14) has led to the creation of multiple titles and general media about P&D Z's world, such as a CoroCoro Comic-serialized manga and a couple of arcade games: Puzzle & Dragons Z: Tamer Battler and the afore-mentioned Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament, both featuring many of Z's signature monsters and Dragon Tamers. Even the original app included these characters as recruitable monsters! Later on, the game was ported to the rest of the world as part of the Puzzle & Dragons Z + Super Mario Bros. Edition combo game, which was released on May 2015.

While Z wasn't a collaboration-savy game like the original, it was possible to unlock special dungeons with specific passwords, mostly featuring many of the first game's "Descended!" line of bosses. Wouldn't you know it, the Taiko no Tatsujin franchise is the only external one to appear as a password dungeon in the game! As such, a limited campaign has been issued between arcade Taiko games (Momoiro) and the first Wii U title, with both games featuring P&D Z's main theme and a 2-part Syrup outfit, becoming the first simultaneous release of content between console and arcade Taiko since Taiko 12 and Wii 1. As the collaboration ended, the song is still playable only to the Wii U users who managed to download it before its removal.

Speaking of the song itself, Sakasama Sekai (lit. 'Upside-Down World') is the 18th single of Japanese tarento Shoko Nakagawa (中川 翔子), and second song on Taiko by her after Strawberry Melody, one of the 10th Taiko arcade's exclusive J-Pop tracks. Her single of this song, released the day before P&D Z's JP launch, is paired with her opening theme for the Japanese run of the American TV series Once Upon a Time.

With upbeat rhythms and a constant speed, Sakasama Sekai's Taiko Oni plays like an average J-Pop song notechart, with different cluster formations and some drumrolls/hitballoons sprinkled in.

Some time after the Taiko x P&D Z collaborations, Taiko games have received a proper, in-game track from the game, which -like it's predecessor before it- has quickly touched both console and arcade grounds. Being used for many of the game's boss fights, Kessen!! (lit. 'Battle!!') is composed by in-house GungHo musician Kenji Ito (伊藤賢治), already responsible for the music in the iOs/Android game. The song is also available to play in Taito's Groove Coaster games, both on the arcade releases and on the currently-running iOs app Groove Coaster Zero.

With 100 more notes than Sakasama Sekai's Oni, Kessen features a denser barrage of clusters and repeating note stanzas, becoming a good benchmark for newbie players for early memorization approach and stamina-enduring skills. This is also the first Game Music track not from Bandai Namco games that is being used for a Taiko boss battle, against the alternative version of the Giganto Rex in one of Taiko 3DS 2's DLC Story mode chapters. The track being inside said DLC pack has also been the very cause of its later removal, as the song's distribution rights for Kessen!! on Don to Katsu no Jikuu Daibouken expired over time. Oddly enough, the track re-appeared from those limited outings for a more permanent stay, during the Red Version firmware period and as part of Taiko Plus's Pazudora pack, on September 8, 2014.

For an even weirder instance of a song's journey in Taiko on this song showcase, we have to look no further than the very last iOS-exclusive pick.

Unlike with the former songs which were more tied in with the games'"proprietary" elements of the franchise, Fight the Fanatics was made by Kenji Ito (伊藤賢治) as a custom boss track piece for the recurring collaboration dungeons of the main-line games from the renowned Final Fantasy series. The collaboration with the influential RPG franchise and GungHo's gacha/puzzle hybrid game has evolved with each re-iteration of the collaborative event, spotlighting Fight the Fanatics not only for the 2-part final boss battle against Kefka from Final Fantasy VI, but also for the later-added dungeon sequel that features Final Fantasy XIII's Orphan as the final boss and the FF Tournament boss fight against Final Fantasy XV's Glauca.

The unique (albeit short) journey of this song in Taiko has seen its debut as the final addition to the aforementioned Pazudora pack on August 15th, 2015; however, the song was removed from downloading by the end of that very same year, meaning that only the people who have grabbed it during the slim 5-months time span will still be able to play it. Those who can access it will be faced by another 1/16-based cluster challenge by notecharter sentai Yamaguchi (ヤマグチ) whose deeper pattern combination put it way ahead than Kessen!! on the difficulty scale perspective.

The trend of Pazudora songs being console-exclusive tracks for the longest time didn't held back the potential for some arcade-aimed action! During the White Version firmware's lifespan, there have been several collaborations involving the arcade branch, ultimately netting the addition of all kinds of customization perks, from outfits/outfit parts to some of the series' monsters becoming Petit Charas to take along with your Taiko avatar!

For the song side, on the other hand, we've seen the return of some of the older tracks to go along with some brand new inclusions, starting from the music of the original app's multiplayer features. Holding Hands is, in fact, the overture BGM of the mobile games' multiplayer mode, which started out as a collaborative 2-player variant. True to the song's name, the team of players share their team formations to form a bulkier party to be handled together by taking separate turns in order to clear dungeons. Later on, it was also added a 3-player competitive multiplayer variant, which uses the same tracks as the ones of 2P sessions.

Arihotto (アリーホット) of the Taiko Team has been in charge of the song's patterns, feeling very reminiscent to the ones of Walking Through The Towers while being a little more lenient on the small mixed-hit small cluster side.

Just like A New Journey is to The Orb Festival regarding the overture/boss BGM song duo, Holding Hands is to Unite The Force for the multiplayer modes of Puzzle & Dragons. Both tracks, once again, are composed by Kenji Ito as well.

Yamaguchi (ヤマグチ) comes back as this song's charter, featuring cluster formations not that much dissimilar to Kessen!'s Oni and a long note cluster whose pattern formation is the same as the final long cluster of Taiko Time's Ura Oni, but with reversed colors instead.

For the latest arcade/console tie-in song, we venture once again into spin-off fields with the next Nintendo 3DS entry of the series: Puzzle & Dragons Cross (パズドラクロス).

Currently a Japan exclusive, the world of Cross is Dorogoza Island, a land full of the so-called 'Drop Energy' which lets humans to raise creatures of all kinds to set off in battle, both as fighters and as morph-able combat suits. Much like with the Pokemon titles, P&D Cross is available in two different variants: Kami no Sho (神の章, 'Gods Chapter') and Ryuu no Sho (龍の章, 'Dragons Chapter'), each with their own story alterations and exclusive features. The story of Puzzle & Dragons Cross is also picked up by an animated series by the same name made by studio Pierrot, whose Japanese premiere of July 4th, 2016, actually pre-dates the launch of the two Cross games (July 28th, 2016)!

One of the Cross games' boss battle themes, Battle -Denkousekka- (lit. 'Lightning Stone') is composed by Kenji Ito and arranged by Yuzo Koshiro (古代祐三). The song was part of one of the collaboration-oriented operations with Dokodon! Mystery Adventure, with the song itself becoming a freely-downloadable song (together with Walking Through The Towers) for a limited time, paired up with the Cross universe's Tamazo being available as a Story mode team mate. The same character made its venture on arcades as well, when its Petit Chara was unlockable as part of one of Red Version's event, as a means to commemorate Battle -Denkousekka-'s arcade debut. The Taiko edit of this song also includes the games' boss warning in the beginning and the 'dungeon clear' jingle at the end!

Charted by Marimo Institute (まりも研究所), this is by far the track on this song showcase with the major number of BPM shifts and scrolling speed alterations (as in, at least more than 1 value for each), with the patterns themselves not straying that much far away from the standards set by the former 8*-rated Oni challenges. Its song ID of puzdx1 leads to intend that this song is intended to be the first one coming from the Cross games to Taiko, ... or, at the very least, that such intention was in the air among the Taiko games staff members at some point.

As "early Twitter reveals of new songs from several composers" is becoming quite the trend for Taiko-related stuff, we might as well abbreviate the usual "Random Composer Facts" label on these kinds of posts into something shorter! (...at least until we come up with better terms, that is)

The latest early reveal is about Honoka Inoue's future involvement into a new Namco Original track, whose details were discussed with Taiko series representatives at a cafe! From the looks of a subsequently-retweeted message, it must have been a vintage diner, no less.

The latest multiple-music-games-crossing mass Touhou arrangement sensation has found another place to call home today, as the 9th anniversary of Cirno's Perfect Math Class has landed in Taito's Groove Coaster arcade branch earlier today. While video playback is not one of this music series's features, its backgrounds surely don't fail to quote the song's Youtube PV in many places!

Just like for Taiko and Synchronica, the song's coming in Groove Coaster has brought up a Touhou-themed mini event, in which players not only can rack up points to unlock limited customization flairs of all sorts (all Cirno-themed for this particular event), but can also try out another Touhou arrangement that is related to the ice fairy, also a part of IOSYS's 9th anniversary song celebration.

[COLLAB] - INSPION's 2017 Autumn Auditions (feat. Taiko no Tatsujin)

The Taiko no Tatsujin shenanigans with newcomer sound unit company INSPION are far from being over, as the latest public effort from both sides is bound to find emerging talents among the many of the Youtube userbase crowd!

In short, INSPION's Autumn Audition round is being issued to reward the talent of the best performers under two separate categories: the Master of Vocals and Master of Creativity divisions. For the former, applicants will have to sing to one of INSPION's supplied instrumental bases with a lyric set of their own choosing, while the latter lets everyone express their own talent as best as they can in Youtube video form... no matter what it is! From music instrument performances to dancing, lyricist works, video editing and more, everything is fair game! (as long as common sense and moral-sounding principles are followed, of course)

For the Master of Vocals category, there will be one Excellence Award winner whose song will be ported to the Taiko no Tatsujin series in the future! The winner will also be hired as an INSPION musician, and he/she will be featured in promo videos with both INSPION and Taiko Team-related personalities. Honorable mentions of the category will also make up to be part of INSPION's vocalist enrollment list, if other outstanding vocal performances have been scouted aside from the winner's.

The Excellence Award winners of the Masters of Creativity category, on the other hand, will be invited to an exclusive barbecue party in Tokyo with the audition's three judges: INSPION president/chief sound producer Kuramochi Takeshi (倉持武志), composer/guitarist Daisuke Kurosawa (黒沢ダイスケ) and Taiko Team leader Etou. Honorable mentions will also be credited in a later promo video and -together with the Excellence Award winners- will receive an official INSPION t-shirt.

By following the indications supplied in the audition's official page, contestants can upload their application as a publicly-shared Youtube video, starting from today (October 3rd) until November 12th. All applications from both categories will be judged during the next 4 days, with the winners for both divisions being announced on November 17th, at around 11 am (JP time). The Master of Vocals winner will be called to record the Taiko no Tatsujin-designed track during an arrangeable span of time that goes between November 18th and December 10th, with the finished form being rendered in playable Taiko form sometime during the early 2018 months.

Tenkaichi Otogesai 4
If our coverage on the imminent fourth Tenkaichi Otogesai collab-tourney hasn't satiated you due to the lack of concrete song-related details, this one should have done it. With the shop preliminaries for the tournament cycle slated to happen mid-to-late November, the songs for that are coming to cabinets in AOU participating store on October 13 (except CHUNITHM, which get the songs on November 2 instead). The Tenkaichi Otogesai website has also been updated with song profiles and artist blurbs.

Coming into Taiko are the TO3-shop-preliminary exclusives from Sound Voltex and Groove Coaster, and one select song from the newcomer CHUNITHM. Going out to all other games from Taiko would be the familiar Sacred Ruin by Drop and GIW feat. vocalist Yura Hatsuki. These four songs will be gathered in the returning "Tenkaichi Otogesai" folder for easy navigation.

Act! Addict! Actors! collaboration

Next on the schedule is the long-since teased collaboration with Act! Addict! Actors! (A3!). Featuring Sakuya Sakuma, Tenma Sumeragi, Banri Settsu and Tsumugi Tsukioka respectively from each of the four troupes as dancers, the game's theme song will hit arcades on October 18, together with Petit-chara outfit parts obtainable just by playing the song with a Banapassport. Remember also the thematic collab merch coming to prize-grab machines too.

Session de Dodon ga Don Release Commemoration

Coinciding with the release of the new home console Taiko no Tatsujin game, the new theme song will be available on the arcades on the same day! Same for the two brand-new songs from the already announced DLC (Konamono☆ is even stealing the thunder from the original DLC), but on a limited schedule for now. The arcade part of the imminent Deemo collaboration is also here with Saika making a same-day appearance here.

Other Miscellaneous Stuff
  • Some of the new songs are also equipped with Issho ni Waiwai Ensou support.
  • Yellow ver.'s second Title Part Gasha also begins on October 11 together with the update. Check the Donder Hiroba for more on this.

  • Tweaks on the display effects in Issho ni Waiwai Ensou, like for the Hand-holding notes, solo zones and duet zones.
  • New Full Combo titles from some of the new songs (or at least on select notecharts), available with the respective songs' release.

The Two Firsts with the PS4-1 Limited Trial Version

Now that people have had some time to tinker with the Session de Dodon ga Don PlayStation Plus-exclusive Trial Version, here is a few keynote innovations already available in this smaller version.

New Modifier: Support
Is Yuugen no Ran/Mada Saitama 2000/(insert personal hurdle here) too hard for you? The new Support (サポート) modifier tunes the core difficulty down for it to be easier. It comes in three different levels to suit how much help you need:
Support Lv1: Note judgement is more lenient
Support Lv2: Note judgement is more lenient + No differentiation between dons and kats (so you can hit with either inputs)
Support Lv3: Note judgement is more lenient + Spirit gauge doesn't drop from misses

While the Support modifier does give you much of a leg-up in clearing some of your hurdles, it must be noted that all scores played with Support are not recorded, and you only get a dainty bronze "Support Clear" (サポートクリア) crown no matter how great you did there.

Support Lv2 in action, with Doron, Yonbai and Detarame. Note that despite actually being randomized, without don/kat differentiation you could have played like the normal notechart.

The State of Ura Notecharts
Compared with past console Taiko no Tatsujin games, Ura notecharts are finally not shown as separate songs on PS4-1, and are available as the Oni difficulty board flipped back with additional directional button presses, matching to the current HD arcades.

But that's not all: on PS4-1 when one player flips up for Ura Oni, the other player can stay on regular Oni for his/her difficulty selection. This is news even over AC0, where if the Ura Oni are flipped up for one player to play, the other side would not be able to choose the regular Oni.
Other Notable Features
  • Doron is now a separate modifier category from "Special" (including the likes of Kanpeki and Tokkun)
  • Training Mode and Best Play Mode are selected from further options in the main Performance Game mode, instead of a separate mode on the main menu.
  • Training Mode has that gimmicky rewind jumble we talked about.
  • Thanks Spotty from the chatbox for the find.
If your PlayStation 4 system language is anything other than Japanese, Traditional Chinese, English or Korean, the game may default to English (except Simplified Chinese which probably defaults to Traditional Chinese). We currently only have Italian footage to confirm, but feel free to confirm otherwise.

A Final Note re: Trial Versions
Yes, "versions" is plural here. As this PlayStation Plus-exclusive Trial Version ends its promotional period at October 9 23:59 (JPT) and becomes unplayable, a different Trial Version with a different song line-up will take its place on the PlayStation Store starting October 10 (that likely doesn't need PSPlus this time). Stay tuned then for another fresh preview look of the game!

More than 10 years ago, the arcade Taiko debut of X-Japan's Kurenai has set quite the legacy as a licensed track, being the holder of the Oni mode with the highest number of notes for the longest time. Flash-forward to a few years back and a cryptic hint about the first PS Vita Taiko title's additional content teases the return of the renowned heavy metal band from Chiba!

Silent Jealousy made its debut on X-Japan's third studio album (Jealousy, released on July 1st, 1991), back when the band was simply known as 'X'. Much like the later-released Kurenai, the speed/metal style mixed in with symphonic elements that marked the band's early-career musical preference, as Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake is referenced in the original song's piano bridge. Silent Jealousy's single release was set on September 11th, 1991; with over 230.000 copies sold in the debut year alone, it has become the 58th best-selling single of that year, topping the 3rd position in Oricon charts for an overall 18-weeks period of permanence. Alongside with Kurenai, Silent Jealousy was also featured in the short film  (also known as Double-X, ダブルエックス), based on mangaka Clamp's X manga series.

Notecharter "Dark Attribute" Matsumoto (マツモト) was heavily involved into V Version commercials and teaser-related stunts, as well as the charter of that game's most difficult newcomers! Silent Jealousy is one of those tasks, for which has made what currently is the 8-star Oni with the highest number of notes to date; due to this fact, it's also the 8* Oni with the lowest point gain ratio of all time (approx. 280 points per perfect hit), even counting all the former console Taiko releases to date! In the same fashion of BLAZING VORTEX's regular Oni, this mode is mostly filled with mono-color clusters a-plenty (primarily Don-dominant) with many parts calling back to fragments of Kurenai's charting style, especially during the Go-Go Time-enhanced choruses. Watch out for the 2-hit color-alternating long note stream, though!

One of Taiko gaming's few special note-less, max-difficulty challenges also happens to be one of the all-time note-bearer champs, only topped off by Yuugen no Ran and its remix counterpart! When the max combo counters of both the regular and Ura Oni modes are combined, however, Silent Jealousy comes on top with 2479 notes between the two modes... and that saying something, considering some of the other newcoming song+Ura additions of V Version (Gimme Choco!! and, again, BLAZING VORTEX)!

As expectable, clearing the chart is more lenient on the stamina spectrum with even longer clusters/streams to reap some random errors along the way and a more profuse note color alternation trend all along the performance.

In flickering heat haze
The voice of your screams resound
To filling despair
The curtain of trepidation rises

Against spiralling insanity
Thrust ahead the black road without fear
Into the abyss craving of darkness
Show your courage to plunge down under

The nightmare ripped apart
Sticking the iron-steel blade on the ground
Carrying through the belief for the slight hope and miracle
To make a winning snatch for the future

In the paradise trapped within
Raise up the flag of truth and stand face to face

The nightmare ripped apart
Sticking the iron-steel blade on the ground
Carrying through the belief for the slight hope and miracle
To make a winning snatch for the future

Here come the five licensed additions on today's firmware version update for the Yellow ver. arcade version.

美女と野獣 Beauty and the Beast (2/3/3/4, Papa Mama Support on Kantan, 141 notes on Oni) (video with Baisoku)
Let's start on something mellow with the latest Disney pick. Well, not so much mellow if you go full force on the multitude of yellow drumrolls, possibly raking over 1000 hits like this person above. What makes the ★4 rating more justified are the frequent irregular offbeats on the singers' own interpretation.

誘惑 Yuuwaku (3/4/5/7, 569 notes on Oni)
While we await for confirmation whether Muzukashii is actually the very same from the Kanjani no Shiwake Eight appearance, the Oni notechart resembles that notechart from 2013 a great deal. Outside of the mid-high speed and small clusters there is few to really grind about, almost as if the notechart came from the simpler days of 2013.

HOWEVER (2/3/3/6, 304 notes on Oni) (video with Baisoku)
The other GLAY pick plays over a low BPM to test on swing rhythm, much like Lifetime Respect -Onna Hen- or Soup (had it not have 1.75x scroll speed) but at a much lower complexity. Like Lifetime Respect -Onna Hen-, scroll-speed modifiers may be suggested should you fail to read the closely knit notes as-is.

にめんせい☆ウラオモテライフ! Nimensei☆Ura-omote Life! (3/5/6/8, 416 notes on Oni)
The second Himouto Umaru-chan theme on Taiko no Tatsujin plays much like the first with mid-high speed cluster streams, except now featuring a closer-knit swing section just after the intro.

拝啓ドッペルゲンガー Haikei Doppelganger (3/5/7/10, 901 notes on Oni)
Frankly a relatively modest ★10 in today's terms (i.e. not being overly crazy like Yuugen and co.), mostly on high speed and volume. Imagine slightly over R.I., about the place with Aka no Senritsu or Necrofantasia, and nicely under Koi-kurenai.

Kicking off at select AOU participating stores is the fourth Tenkaichi Otogesai collab-tourney with the addition of the cross-inclusion songs. Spoilers: all three are harder than Sacred Ruin, that's for sure.

Gameplay videos from today's crossovers in the other two freshly-updated music series are also supplied!

極圏 Kyokuken (5/7/7/10, 944 notes on Oni)
And this is our easiest pick of the day, oh man. Speed and stamina is the major element of frustration here, but otherwise the notechart is sticking at an asymptote under the piano streams: the streams may be long and fast but the patterns are largely regular enough for processing, with dashes of 24th kat-crunches at the middle and near the end.

SOUND VOLTEX
Groove Coaster

怒槌 Ikazuchi (5/7/8/10, 1194 notes on Oni)
Another speed demon. While luckily the first 850+ notes stayed in only 16th separation, but the complex long streams in succession would have drained your stamina significantly before the final gauntlet including 32th and mixed measures.

SOUND VOLTEX
Groove Coaster

Scarlet Lance (5/7/8/10, 1000 notes on Oni)
Also speed demon, and worse still this one is also complex. Handswitching across clusters and doubles and mixed-color 24th not unlike the infamous "Ryougen beam" are highlights of the challenge.

SOUND VOLTEX
Groove Coaster

We end this post with the Groove Coaster and SOUND VOLTEX gameplay of Taiko gaming's Sacred Ruin, in order to close the circle (link and link). This is also the portion where we inform you that CHUNITHM is getting its own crossover-y action on a later date, sometime during the first week of November. Rest assured that a Sonority Scouts about that round isn't too far from said release day, either!

It's time, once again, to take a trip to Meme Land, in order to find out that there's more that meets the eye, when it comes to the history of the artist behind one of the latest international Internet viral hits...

As a testament to the notion that anything can become a meme in this world with the right attention-grabbing elements and a generous worldwide sharing process, the brief music video that was uploaded on Youtube last year on August 25th about mixing pens with fruits has scored over 125 million views as of today, resulting in many quiffs/references in moden pop culture and the brief song itself becoming playable in Taiko no Tatsujin.

Pen-Pinapple-Apple-Pen is made by the song-writer Picotaro (ピコ太郎), which is one of the art names used by comedian/DJ Kazuhito Kosaka (古坂和仁). Born July 17th, 1973, his musical career started out as one of the main members of the comedy-oriented unit NO BOTTOM! (ノーボトム!) as Daimaou Kosaka (古坂大魔王), making music that could be better described as a mixture between festival/traditional Japanese vibes and electronic music. In the early 2000s, NO BOTTOM! has been re-branded under the title of NBR (NEW BUSHIDOU RAVERS), which is still an active act to this day! During the NBR days, Kazuito Kosaka has made a couple of original songs for the PlayStation 2 port of the 12th arcade installment in bemani's pop'n music series: TIN-DON-DANCE and Ora Tokyo sa Iguda (I'LL GO TO TOKYO!), both of which being further built upon with long versions in subsequent soundtrack releases.

Back to the more current meme-y grounds, PPAP truly started to become a break-out sensation on about a month, with many parodies all over Youtube and a 1st-month balance of nearly 8 million views. The song being shared over Twitter by Justin Bieber sealed its popularity overseas as well! While, by admission of Pikotaro himself, the Youtube upload of the song didn't make him earn a single Yen, the song made it to be purchasable in digital and retail forms, peaking the Billboard Japan Hot 100 charts at No.1. Being the shortest song to ever accomplish such a feat on these charts (about 45 seconds!), Pikotaro's creation was also awarded a Guinness World Record for accomplishing such a feat. Outside of Taiko, PPAP has been ported to bemani's jubeat series, with the song's long version (link) being released on Youtube two days after said jubeat port, on October 27th, 2016.

While it's the shortest playable song ever featured in anything bemani-related yet, this is not the case on Taiko fields, where instead it has grabbed the (dubious) milestone of being the song whose combined notecount on all modes is the lowest one among the current arcade generation's songs (369); with a pale value of 156 notes on Oni, it's also the 7-star challenge with the lowest note count in the current rating standard, topping even the actual shortest-playable song in Taiko history to date! (Taiko 3DS 3's Sekai Fushigi Hakken! Opening Theme, which has 167 notes instead). Numerical accolades aside, simple 3-note cluster sections and scrolling speed wizardry are PPAP's signature traits, aiding to give a sense of visual variety between frequent BPM shifts and drumroll markers.

Namco Taiko Blog (19 October 2017) - Behind the Notechart: HARDCORE no Kokoroe

$
0
0

This week's Thursday blog entry features the latest seasonal Rewards Shop song's Oni chart analysis, as introduced by the usual Yamaguchi and told by a brand new member to the Taiko Team...

Indeed, HARDCORE no Kokoroe has been charted by the hands of the latest newcomer to Taiko gaming's charting crew, going by the nickname of Emukepi (えむけぴ). Having heard in advance the coming of DJ Myosuke's first original song in Taiko gaming, he waited for its finished version in order to claim the charting job for such an unique-sounding song, which he ultimately got!

Starting from the overall musical theme, the more music-driven portions of the Oni notecharts have been a result of two concepts' clash with each other: Gimmick Notechart (ネタ譜面) and Serious Notechart (ガチ譜面). Emukepi's mention of Gimmick Notechart is his own term to describe the charting elements that make for a flashy appearance, which in Taiko charts is mostly expressed with scrolling speed changes.

Here are a couple of examples for this trend, straight from a cropped Auto-Play segment of the song:

For a sped-up Gimmick Notechart example, here's a speedy drumroll that partially covers what's next...

...while for the opposite example, here are some slow-flowing note markers that are hidden behind the regular-sped notes!

As Emukepi's speed changes do also reflect on the bottom-screen dancers moving on rhythm for each speed change, we have both BPM and scrolling speed changes to thank for such a variety of examples... but don't worry- each note still follows the song's rhythm!

The Serious Notechart approach, on the other hand, opts to valorize a song's musicality with a direct beat-to-beat Taiko notechart translation. Being a boss-sounding song with several kick-based portions, most of the long 1/16 clusters do reflect those portion in Taiko form.

One of the quotable examples on Serious Notechart, the pre-break long cluster!

The overall chart's Musical Notation, of course, doesn't stray that far away to the two rule-of-thumb categorizations that were introduced into Yamaguchi's first "Behind the Notechart" features, so here's like the Musical Arrangement and Game-like Arrangement schools of thinking have molded HARDCORE no Kokoroe into its finished state!

The Musical Notation for this song rotates around, once again, the bass-drum kicks that can be heard all throughout the song, which also helped scaling the note amounts for the easier modes. For a quick comparison, the same idea constitues great part of Kita Saitama 2000's difficulty scaling between the 4 modes!

Oni/Muzukashii comparison of the same portion, with Kat notes marking a slight difficulty increment from the two otherwise-identical portions.

The Game-like Notation approach, on the other hand, played more on the last chorus for the desire to make a differently-sounding rhythm that feels challenging to follow, which relyed on pattern repetitions that run at different timing signatures. For evidence, ...

Pictured above is a 4-note cluster running at 16 beats per measure (1/16), which gets inherited alongside the entire note stanza, but running as a 24-beat/measure (1/24) cluster instead.

Similar example but different time signatures: an 1/8 beat succession of 4 Kat notes that later is repeated with the previous stanzas at 1/12 beats, an alternation example first seen with Joubutsu 2000.

Emukepi has also been glad that his Oni notechart for the song has been deemed worthy of being featured in one of the latest Dojo Ranking's final main courses! Being a project that took both direct and indirect approaches to best represent the track in chart form, he's satisfied with the final result, up to the point of looking forward to chart some other boss-like songs in the future.

The last lines of this blog entry included the names of other recent songs that have been charted by the newcomer Taiko Team notecharter sentai:

As we're headed towards the next week-end, we have another Sonority Scouts post in a row to make our reading base aware that the 9th Anniversary version of Cirno's Perfect Math Class has finally reached all the initially-scheduled music game series for porting means. They're both series that are handled by SEGA, no less!

On the top we have a no-hit HQ video of the song on maimai, where the song has landed last Tuesday with video visuals, like what we've already seen in Synchronica grounds. Below these lines, on the other hand, is a no-hit HQ video recording of the song in CHUNITHM, set at the hardest difficulty as well. This last port was released yesterday, for the record.

Now that the circle is closed, the SotW entry for this song will now hold all the videos for the non-Taiko music game series as well!
