It's time for another mono-themed Anime double feature on the Song of the Week shores, as we take a closer look at a series that doesn't shy away from giving more than a wink to nerd/geek pop culture...

Written by the nick-named Sankaku Head (サンカクヘッド) from the Yamanashi prefecture, Himouto! Umaru-chan (干物妹!うまるちゃん) is one of the slice-of-life manga series that is oriented on the comedic side of said story genre. The manga began its serialization on March 14th, 2013, as part of Weekly Young Jump's featured series and -later on- its spin-off Miracle Jump as a 2-chapter story. Since then, the series has been continuing to this day, with 9 tankōbon volumes being released/planned up to date.

The himouto portmanteau name in the title better describes the defining traits of Umaru Doma the series's protagonist; she's the younger sister in her household (hence the 妹 -imouto- part) and she acts as an himono (干物, lit. 'dried fish'): highly active in public while being lazy at home. In Umaru's case, she's a top-performing high school girl that, once at home, reverts into a total layabout that spends her time playing video games and being overly dependent on her older brother Taihei for any sort of means. On 2015, the series was picked up by the ex-Toei affiliated animation studio Doga Kobo for a 13-episode anime adaptation, which was broadcast from July to September of that year.

With over 2.2 million tankōbon volumes being sold overall as of today, the series has sprung out with many different side projects, including a side-story manga about one of Umaru's friends (秋田妹!えびなちゃん, Akita Ibokko! Ebina-chan), collaboration projects with many Japan-oriented parties and two videogames by FURYU: the Ps Vita's "sister-raising" sim game Himouto! Umaru-chan Himouto! Ikusei Keikaku~(干物妹!うまるちゃん ~干物妹!育成計画~) of December 2015 and March 2017's Nintendo 3DS puzzle game Himouto! Umaru-chan Daratto Puzzle (干物妹!うまるちゃん だらっとパズル). As mentioned in the intro, the Umaru-chan series' popularity can be attributed -among other factors- to the many references to nerd/geek culture with a keener attention to the gaming grounds. Sure enough, even Taiko no Tatsujin isn't spared from said network of references...

The Umaru-chan anime's relation to music games, however, doesn't stop with these kinds of winks, as its OP theme has made quite the rounds in the music game universe! Before its Taiko venture, in fact, said song also appeared in many of bemani's music series (jubeat, the defunct BeatStream, REFLEC BEAT and pop'n music), as well as Sega's maimai and CHUNITHM, where its 1st ending theme was ported as well. The opening theme (bearing a title literally translatable as 'Pretentious☆MetaMaruPhose!') stars Umaru's JP voice actress -Aimi Tanaka (田中あいみ)- as the sole singer, with a lyrics set penned by Asuka Ogura (おぐらあすか). The song's composer, on the other hand, is Masatoshi 'manzo' Sakashita (坂下正俊), who was already seen on this corner as the composer of GM track Wonder Momoi and in general Taiko gaming for other Anime-aimed songs of his making, such as Clover♣Kakumation and Su・Ma・I・Ro.

Just like Akeboshi Rocket, one of this year's earliest SotW features (link), this opening theme's inclusion into Taiko gaming has been determined by the high degree of appreciation shown by lots of Taiko players, as it was one of the most voted songs for V Version's DLC poll that wasn't previously featured in the games, subsequently decreeing its inclusion as part of one of the latter-half DLC pack period. Just like Akeboshi Rocket, its arcade public debut was also operated during White Version's lifespan!

Charted by Kirakira☆Sakamoto (きらきら☆さかもと), here's another anime theme in Taiko whose short length is the main hindrance to its amount of notes and general difficulty degree on the highest mode setting, with a stark prevalence of small 1/16 note clusters guiding the player towards a nasty-ish finisher made of some 1/24 spikes and some last-minute hand-switching cluster action.

Two years after the original Umaru-chan anime's ending, Doga Kobo grabbed the series' rights, once again, to make an additional 13-episodes season for Sankaku Head's fortunate manga series, simply titled Himouto! Umaru-chan R (干物妹!うまるちゃん R). Said series began its broadcasting on October 3rd this year, marking the adoption of new OP and ED themes.

In the case of the former we have Nimensei☆Ura-omote Life! (roughly translatable as 'Second Grade☆Ura-mote Life!'), starring once again Aimi Tanaka (田中あいみ) as the singer. The song's composers/arrangers/lyricists, on the other hand, are Ayato 'JAVELIN' Shinozaki (篠崎あやと) and Ryo Tachibana (橘亮祐)... in other words, the duo best known in music gaming for the Massive New Krew unit!

Roughly one week after the 2nd Umaru-chan season's premiere, the song made its music game debut with Taiko no Tatsujin arcade gaming, in a chart that shares some of the difficulty degree hindrances (namely, the short length) of the first Umaru-related OP while instead offering a different approach to the modern 8* formula, here more focused on handswitch-heavy small clusters all along the way. Just like in Kakushinteki☆Metamarupho~se!, the sped-up portion before the chorus had its scrolling speed adjusted to feel more in tone with the rest of the scrolling pace in the track in general.

Taiko Goofs: The HD Cabinet From Dummyland

If you have been with us long enough, you might have remembered the Taiko Goofs series, all to featuring the wonky seams that Taiko no Tatsujin games sometimes left showing. Here we are bringing back the branding to take a look at other glitches and bugs that pop up from time to time.

Today we have this peculiar specimen of a Taiko AC0 arcade cabinet that at least two Twitter users have got the pleasure (?) of experience and the mobile data to share with the world.

The cabinet in question, dubbed the Dummy Version (ダミーバージョン) by commenters, was found by Twitter user @mn16Gyan as early as October 21 in an undisclosed location. It is confirmed to still be present on the 22nd by the same person, and also (likely separately) by another @taso_maaya. This quote-unquote "version" is ridden with missing data, mostly song titles, and just unsightly replaced by a red rectangular placeholder with white Dummy Data (ダミーデータ) on it.

Ah yes, that god-song poopy-notechart pick from Taiko no Tatsujin Dummy ver.
(Source: [left] Twitter @mn16Gyan [right] Twitter @taso_maaya)

While that's all nice and dandy (?), that is not the only thing wrong with this "version". Moving on to the Ranking Dojo, where in addition to more Dummy Data running loose, sometimes rouge song titles would be shown in the final results, even to wrong genre-colored plates.

The only ★10 I know from Koi was the copyright strikes

After going through the things that at least still work, now we get to the things that doesn't work. By that we mean the Namco Original folder is just in total mess. Scarlet Lance, Kyokuken and MANKAI☆Kaika Sengen is now mixed in here for some reason, and Tsunagare! Hirogare! Uchi-agare! is available way before the official release slated next Thursday. Videos by our sources indicate that the wrongly-timed Tsunagare! Hirogare! Uchi-agare! and wrongly-placed Kyokuken would just crash the game if you choose them.

And the most meaty discovery of all: there is now a song by the name of Taiko Drum Monster with the subtitle of "steμ feat. siroa" that is apparently already textured into such unknown build. The artist/vocalist duo in the subtitle is notable for having contributed Libera Ray (sequel to God Ray in a "Ray Series") to Synchronica, with steμ being a kouhai to composer Taku Inoue. Them having ties to Namco adds some strand of truth to the discovery.

So... I don't have anything else concrete to say about this other than there are such evidence. What do you think? Especially what do you think of the Taiko Drum Monster song title?

Chasing down shadows creeping onto nightly pathways
Quietly running across the stone pavement

Terrified by the creeping fangs
Shaking the illusion of the weak and small me from way back when

Now let's get this started with
Signalled by the resounding bell of midnight at zero
Quite a fairy tale this is
As if the magic could not be solved
Reality as anticipated grasped with both hands thrust forward
Smoldered thoughts hidden deep within the heart

Now let's get this over with
The end marked by the resounding gunshot
You are not going to get away
As reflected over apathetic pupils
Oppositing entreaty swept off by both hands held up
Sworn determination taken hold deep within the heart

Hopeful that Dvorak won't roll on his grave due to us lending the title of one of his works as a punny device for a new sub-feature introduction, we're starting to signal the Taiko Team's notice for new/returning artists' early-advice contributions over on Twitter!

Opening our newly-titled notice corner is MOES, the creator of the CreoFUGA-winning Dokidoki Munekyun Omatsuri Time, in a tweet from yesterday where the artist has shared with the rest of the Internet the finish point of his latest recording session at Bandai Namco's headquarters. When will the final result be released in a playable state?

-------------------------------------------

As a side-note to put a kind-of close to the whole "Random Composer Facts" sub-corner, here are the artists that were formerly revealing in advance tidbits about their next song/s, with the eventual final product being shown off on the side (with links when available).

Taiko no Tatsujin's PS4 debut is upon us! For this instance of new-Taiko-title coverage, we're trying out a new format to give out a more tidy visual overview of the newcoming tracks. If other note-worthy details deserve a mention (ie. new gameplay features/unlockable tracks, ...), these will be placed below the new songs's grid.

Additional Notes
 LOSER
3/5/6/8 (347)
Kenshi Yonezu's latest playable track in Taiko, after his former console-exclusive Variety picks. It plays under a lot of backbeats a-la ANTI-HERO, no less!
 Apollo (アポロ)
1/2/3/2 (397)
Porno Graffiti's latest song on Taiko, as well as the lowest-rated Oni track of Taiko PS4's launch day
 Hello Kitty (ハローキティ)
1/3/3/4 (200)
The track inspired by Sanrio's popular kitten mascot, with both long clusters and 1/24 - 1/12 patterns to train newcomers to tempo changes in a mostly-accessible way.
 Hanrock (ハンロック)
4/6/7/10 (611)
If you put the recent Classic arrangements from Kazuro Tajima on a blender, its resulting notechart is what you would get for his latest track! While light on the note count, watch out for the song's ever-changing pace. Arrangement of Brahms' Hungarian Dance No.6, which makes the title punny now.
 Theme of Ryu
3/5/6/8 (627)
Street Fighter V's character theme for fighting games veteran Ryu. It's an almost-pure 1/16 cluster challenge, with several back-to-back consecutive note formations.
 Heat Haze Shadow 2
4/6/7/9 (765)
The latest playable song from the Tekken series, as well as the latest Nam-Combo Oni notechart. Watch out for the longer clusters' note formations!
 Tales of Berseria Medley (テイルズオブベルセリアメドレー)
4/6/6/8 (675)
The third playable medley with music from the 'Tales of' RPG series. It's also the most scrolling speed-happy of said trio, no less!
 Brand New Theater!
3/4/6/8 (734)
im@s Million Live! Theather Days's theme song, as well as one of our previous Song of the Week features (link). Another pure 1/16 cluster challenge is added to Session de Dodon ga Don's newcomer Oni lineup.
 Urban Striker
3/4/6/8 (648)
The third Taiko-playable song from the PS2 game Critical Velocity. While it holds the lowest-rated Oni among the other tracks from the same game, the expected blend between 1/16 and 1/24
 Saika
...
The Rayark-spawn contribution of the Taiko x Deemo collaboration.
4/5/7/9 (776)
Session de Dodon ga Don's theme song. Watch out for the upbeat speedy rhythm!
 Trust Game (トラストゲーム)
5/6/6/9 (657)
SaChi's 2nd Namco Original song, after Kimidori Version's Jikuuchou Sousa 2-ka. Mastering its frantic small clusters and irregular rhythms is the key leading to a Full Combo.
 Magical Parfait (マジカル・パフェ)
4/7/8/9 (652)
The new full-instrumental Namco Original of the launch window. Marvel as longer note clusters and 1/24 spikes become more frequent as the song progresses, but mind the Donkama-recalling portion as well!
 Sotsu Omeshiki Full (そつおめしき・ふる)
4/6/7/10 (1487)
The two-parter song by unmo that launched the School Matters series, now combined as a single track! As a result, the charts from the original and the 2-ban version are merged, resulting into the new max note count champion of the series.
Kaichu Teien o Motsu Shoujo (懐中庭園を持つ少女)
...
Harunaba and Chihiro Ishiguro's latest joint-forces effort, also available to play on Yellow Ver. arcades for a limited time.
 Konamono☆ (コナモノ☆)
...
Go Takuro's new Namco Original. Originally announced for PS4's Vol.2 DLC pack, it's playable on Yellow Ver. arcades in advance for a limited time.

UPDATE 1 (25/10/17) - Star ratings and Oni notecounts added for all the new default songs (minus Brand New Theather!), courtesy of an early furagetter who held a livestream of the game on Youtube (link).

From its former roots as an Anime-linked toy maker, Bandai's name has been built upon the profitability of the figure-oriented merchandise coming from Sunrise's long-running science fiction, mecha-based Gundam (ガンダム) series, resulting into the later port of Gundam songs into Taiko gaming as early as the series's very first arcade release. With modern-day sales figures revealing that the popular Gunpla (ガンプラ, portmanteau identifying the many plastic Gundam model lines) make up 90% of the Japanese character plastic-model market, why don't give some relevance of this merchandise-y side of the Gundam franchise?

That thought process might have crossed the minds of the series's top men as well, as part of the franchise's 35th anniversary celebrations resulted into the release of a Gundam Anime series that is about Gunpla fighting models in more contemporary times! Released in 2013, Gundam Build Fighters (ガンダムビルドファイターズ) is a 25-episode series that is set after the 2nd popularity boom of the Gunpla figurines, during whose times have also emerged dedicated competitions where Gunpla owners battle other oppenents' models with their own remote-controlled fighter, in the so-called Gunpla Battle tournaments. With ties to other series/products in the general Gundam franchise, Build Fighters had a 25-episode sequel series in 2014, called Gundam Build Fighters Try (ガンダムビルドファイターズトライ); both seasons also had Original Animation specials to be aired after their run's end, as well as light novel adaptations.

Cerulean is the first opening theme of Builder Fighters Try, composed by the Avex Trax rock band BACK-ON. Formed in 2002 and in activity still today, both as the act itself and as part of the newly-formed BAReeeeeeeeeeN (バリーン) unit with the members of GReeeeN, BACK-ON has been in charge of the opening/insert themes of both Gundam Builder Fighters series.

Shika@ni~San (しか@に~さん) of the Taiko Team was the man in charge of Cerulean's charts, with an average-tier 7* Oni with more Kat notes overall (approx. 55% of the total note count). The song is a console exclusive to this day, with all its releases being gated behind DLC-based shenanigans.

Groovy Duel Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: BANDIT FLOWER
Version

For a look at the "more-traditional" side of the Gundam franchise, here's instead the latest upcoming song release, spawned from the Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt (機動戦士ガンダム サンダーボルト) series.

Penned by mangaka Yasuo Ohtagaki (太田垣康男) from March 2012, Thunderbolt is a manga spin-off whose event succession is chronologically set in motion during and after the events of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series from 1979, during the year Universal Century 0079. The conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon is still going strong, but the pivotal battlefield on focus, this time around, is a shoal zone littered with debris from destroyed space colonies, dubbed the "Thunderbolt Sector" due to the frequent electrical discharges that said space junk generate over time. As the Zeon forces have secured the Thunderbolt Sector as a vital supply route, the Earth federation sends out the Moore Brotherhood spaceship with four of the best Gundam fighters in order to snag the strategic location away from the clutches of the renowned Zeon sniper
Daryl Lorenz.

Counting 9 tankobon releases to this day and an English localization project issued by Viz Media, the Gundam Thunderbolt spin-off has been later on picked up by Sunrise to be ported online as an ONA (Original Net Animation), divided in two seasons of 4 episodes each. Both seasons of the Thunderbolt web-based adaptation have been also edited altogether as two compilation movies: June 2016's Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky (機動戦士ガンダム サンダーボルト) and the newly-announced Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower (機動戦士ガンダム サンダーボルト BANDIT FLOWER), which is going to make its debut later this year between November 18th and December 1st.

----------------------------------------------------

Today's double-feature is also a means for us to recon a mistake we made for last week's Taiko x Gundam Thunderbolt collaboration announcement (link). On that instance, we stated that Groovy Duel was a song coming from the Bandit Flower movie, when in actuality it's part of the Thunderbolt ONA's second season score.

Welp, it could have gone worse, I suppose. I mean, it's not like some overly-lazy pundit on the Internet has been up to steal that article without credit mentions and keeping up that mistake, alongside some less-intelligible English writing than my usual typos... Right?

We already knew that the CHUNITHM side of the Tenkaichi Otogesai tournament would have been addressed on a later date than the other participants, but today we've come to know that there's going to be a little something more behind it! Together with the Phase 1 cross-over additions, in fact, is also the Tenkaichi-spawn song for this year's edition of the Otogesai: Xevel by Tatsh. (...is it going to be related to the likes of Xepher and Xa, perhaps?)

With the first of the Phase 2 songs getting its release date announced, it's highly probable that the other tracks' reveal isn't that much far off from now. However, will all these songs be shared among all the participants?

As expected, the notice of the other songs' venture for the latest edition of the Tenkaichi Otogesai didn't fail to pop up after yesterday's reveal, as the leftover parties decided to spill out the beans about their release. After the jump, the Groove Coaster and SOUND VOLTEX tracks are also mentioned!

Starting from the Bandai Namco-friendly grounds, we can spot some familiar titles with the newly-revealed Taiko Drum Monster... and with that, of course, we are referring to the fact that one faulty Yellow Version arcade already spoiled us of the surprise release weeks in advance (link), complete with the artist references as well! We just have to wait 2 days to see if the supposedly-leaked star ratings are also the ones of the actual song.
Surprisingly enough, even one of this edition's two "side-wheel" music game series has its own song to boot, as Synchronica is joining the party as well! The track from the touchscreen arcade game is Crystal Hail, made by independent composer Nhato.
Taking a page from the collaborative-fueled script of the last otogesai's SOUND VOLTEX shores, the latest track from Groove Coaster to be made for the tournament is a duo piece as well! With the combined composing efforts of Cranky and Zuntata composer MASAKI, ouroboros -twin stroke of the end- already sounds menacing...
The SOUND VOLTEX side, on the other hand, is more silent on the artist-referencing mood for their leg of the Otogesai-made song, as we only know the title of the song itself: GERBERA. Aside from the fact that its name refers to a genus of the Asteracae plant family (reference picture), there's nothing much else we can say about it at this point...

UPDATE: From an earlier-shared version of the song profile on the Otogesai website (photo evidence, from plurk), we've come to know that GERBERA is made by Yasuhiro 'TAG' Taguchi (田口康裕); this reference, however, has been omitted everywhere else for some reason, where there is just a generic "BEMANI Sound Team" label on any official song listing that refers to the song, when it comes to the artist involved...

Roughly a week has gone since the latest big console Taiko game's coming, which means for us that it's time for a sneak peek at how has the launch window period been for the first home console game in Sony fields after years.

There's no surprise to state how the Japanese audience loves their portable Taiko gaming the most, but Session de Dodon ga Don's chart debut has quite the low early-adopter ratio, despite the targeted system's huge user base. Moving a little bit more than 28.000 copies, Taiko's PS4 debut is barely lower than some of the former PS2 console entries, making it to a 5th place for its debut in a week that has also seen a number of big names coming to Japan as well. As for Session de Dodon ga Don's Famitsu ratings, we've been left empty-handed for once...

In case some of you are asking if/how we will integrate newer sales figures into last year's sales figures-centric Feature post, we're still thinking about something to address those altogether in a later instance...

Taiko Drum Monster (3/5/7/10; 850 notes on Oni)
With a title that winks to the infamous US-first console Taiko release, the 4th Otogesai's song addition from the Taiko side checks in with a speedy Oni challenge that implements both aggressive scrolling speed pressure a-la Tabaneito and frequent within its cluster sections. Not to mention that it's one of the few tracks for the series to feature swing-ish rhythms, no less!

Alas, however, we are also served with one disheartening reality for the cross-over tourney's Phase 2, as it appears that each participating music game family has received today their proprietary song(s) and theirs alone...

While yes, it's disappointing to have another no-song-sharing phase for the latest iteration of the Tenkaichi Otogesai tournament, we have some other new songs to talk about nevertheless! Up here we can see Tatsh's Xevel, while after the jump are placed all the remaining newcomers.

Back at Bandai Namco's for a while, here we have Nhato's Crystal Hail in an Autoplay video on Technical, the hardest difficulty setting for the game. No clowning around with a Lv.17 rating!

Up here, instead, is the 4-hands-made composition that was made for the Groove Coaster side of the Otogesai's Phase 2, geared up with high difficulty ratings on all modes, frequent rhythm changes and lots of aggressive visual angles to be reckoned with while playing. Thread lightly!

The last of the Phase 2 song lot is TAG's GERBERA, whose MAXIMUM difficulty setting matches the one of the other songs that were ported during the first phase of the tourney. Nothing but visual chaos to see here, as usual!

We end up this brief feature with a collection of the Phase 1 Otogesai songs that have been ported today on CHUNITHM, together with the aforementioned Xevel. They're all rated Lv.13 on the Master difficulty level, as opposed to the newcomer Tatsh tune's Lv.13+ rating.

Up here is a no-hit recording of Sacred Ruin (because we're a Taiko blog after all), while below these lines are the other transplanted songs, together with CHUNITHM's own original boss tune sharing from the Otogesai's first phase:

Title Fix: Hand-delivered by YMY Herself

Our latest Title Fix has the creator herself clarifying her intentions in setting the title. That is like the best authority we could have, right?

Subsequent to the latest Namco Taiko Blog from which one of the addition was a complete YMY-only challenge in Ranking Dojo Gaiden,YMY herself (@yyyamamo) has retweeted the announcement tweet, while adding a bit of lore of her creation:
"Speaking of, since we haven't talked of the etymology for ザストゥール from ザストゥールの魔導書 so here are a few words. The origin can be found from Hastur from Cthulhu Mythos, which from a certain source it is also denoted as "Xastur" and changing into such pronunciation."

With respect to her reveal, we will also change our denotation accordingly:
ザストゥールの魔導書 Zastohl no Madousho → Xastur no Madousho

Day by Day! is one of Kimidori Version's Don Challenge debuts, with its release dated back to October 2014. We've come to know only now who's behind this song, so why don't digress further into this topic?

This vocals-enhanced Namco Original is made by guitarist/composer Miyaji Kazuaki (宮路一昭) (Twitter), member of the independent doujin group GeOnDan and founder/current CEO of the music production company TONES Co. Ltd. Outside of his soundtrack album works, he's been spotted in the music game scene as the guitarist of the Zektbach-signed song Wenkamui, which was ported in the original release of the REFLEC BEAT arcade series (link). Day by Day's singer, on the other hand, is the nick-named MANA (Twitter), who recently has lent again her voice for Taiko means as the singer of Session de Dodon ga Don's theme song, Tsunagare! Hinogare! Uchi-agare!

One of the most-average Oni hurdles of the 8-star difficulty pool, this averagely-paced track has a cluster blend that can cater to many rookie players' taste to train on, from the short 3-note clusters to longer note sequences and the current-meta-heavy lone 1/24 spike.

Feature: Hiding the Staff, a Sympho-Neighbours Story

While yes, we are fully aware of our nature on this corner of the Internet of being a Taiko no Tatsujin-oriented news blog, we've been subjected to a particular episode earlier this week that is gradually turning out to be one of the many jigsaw pieces in a particular frame, picturing quite the worry-some scenario for Bemani series fans and music game players in general.

With this situation coming out fresh on many fronts and (almost) nothing but a sea of undocumented/unverifiable facts surrounding the problems of artist mentions' disappearance, this blend between our usual Taiko-centric trivia sources and the Sympho-Neighbours family of features is here to have a look at how is the stage being set for this peculiar situation. Take this as a 'starting point' look for the events that are unfolding during these very days, as we won't make of this a step-by-step episodic series to follow up...

For the user-input piece of media you're about to see, we'd like to thank the people contributing to the "Konami/Bemani and Artist conflicts." forum board on rhythm game website Zenius -i- vanisher, as well as Twitter users @p6p, @MILI216, @acTroopers and the plurk thread that gave us the picture on the top of this page, among others.

For starters, let's address the actual issue that is being discussed on this feature. In short, the identities/aliases of the in-house Bemani artists for all the most recently-made tracks are being progressively removed from all their newest creations'"artist mention" areas, with a generic 'BEMANI Sound Team' label being displayed instead. This phenomenon has been occurring in many of Bemani's music game series in the last few weeks, with more than one factor pointing the most dedicated fans of those series to worry for the future of Konami's music game branch.

Longtime Taiko fans are pretty much used at this point to see a vast majority of Namco Original songs being uncredited in the games' song list, a syndrome that has affected the series since the very beginning that is still kicking strong to this day (to an extent); for that reason, this situation would not seem that much troublesome from "our side" of the music game fanbase. This, however, is quite the opposite case when considering the history of Bemani games, well versed since its inception into crediting each and every artist that composes original music for one of its many series of both past and present times.

This aspect acquires another layer of relevance when this emerging story is being compared to another heated debacle that has involved Konami as a whole in recent times, with the credit removal and successive firing of videogame creator (and one-time vice-president of Konami) Hideo Kojima. Many debates and horror stories have been shared on the Internet about the 'A Hideo Kojima Game' line removal from the later trailers/box art of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, but while we're not here to seek out the whole truth for any of these scenarios (as, sadly, rock-hard evidence for most of behind-the-scenes conversations/happenings between the staff working at Konami is still really close to zero), it's interesting to share one of the many rumors that were floating by during these times:

skip at ~1:40

Many anonymous sources, such as the ones that have been involved in the making of the video above were starting to claim that, as a result of the company's apparent shift to different gaming markets, many game-developing team were being merged into macro-groups that all worked together for a multiple amount of projects at the same time. According to the video above's inquired sources, for example, the team behind the DanceDanceRevolution games have been supposedly merged with all the other audio teams of the music game branches, as part of a plan that sees the unification of all the individual teams working for a specific game/series into a super unit that would work on all series at the same time.

As also the creator of the video above stresses out in the same clip, the report sources (as well as many others like these on the Internet) about both the Konami-related caseshave to be considered as mere speculation talk at this point, due to the lack of accountability that anonymous sources suffer of. When future events, however, chime back to the time-proven partial and end results, the worries for certain outcomes may start up to rise up again from the grave...

Fast-forward to a few weeks ago, the BEMANI Fan Site has started to undergo a number of different changes that altered its core content in a number of ways that have cast some concern for the return of the MGS-like credits-out scenario. First of all, the entire Artists section of the site, formerly including short bios for all the current in-house Bemani artists, has been emptied as of July of this year, only leaving there the profile of the Konami-enrolled professional Bemani games player Dolce. For some references about those changes, we have a couple of archived web links with the help of the WayBackMachine website: Link 1 (dated March '17) shows the Artists section before said changes, while Link 2 (dated July '17) displays the currently-ongoing situation. All the former page version's sub-pages for the individual artists' bios have been removed from the website as well.

Following up that incident, future Top 10 song roll videos that were included in the most recent Bemani-hosted livestreams have started to feature songs whose imprinted artist credit mentions were removed. This time around, the comparison for 4 of those tracks have been documented by one user over Twitter:

Act 3 of this increasingly-troublesome story is the one we've witnessed this very week, with the artist credit for in-house contributors being replaced with the 'BEMANI Sound Team' label. For the SOUND VOLTEX track of the 4th Tenkaichi Otogesai, the song GERBERA in its original song listing on the Otogesai website had its creator, the nicknamed TAG, referenced in the Artist section, only to be redacted from the page a few hours later. Once again, for a quick comparison we forward you to the Plurk-shared screenshot that opened up this feature with the one below, snapped a few hours later.

This event has not been limited to the Tenkaichi-spawn song either, as other freshly-updated arcade series are starting to crank out the BEMANI Sound Team tune for some of the other new releases. The tweets below, for example, have documented how a couple of the newest songs made for the pop'n music series had their artist mentions made more generic-looking...

As of now, to figure out what is actually behind the scenes to ignite such changes is anyone's guess, but opinionated pieces and allegedly-recovered witnessing that address the situation have been circulating for a while. One of the most shared quotes comes from the nick-named AIJ, reporting one of the end products of a dialogue between several people working inside and around Konami and the bemani division:

"Things are a total mess right now. A few months ago there was a conflict over the artists wanting control over their own works while Konami wants total control since the content was made for Konami. Internal strife and conflict as the company divided into even more subdivisions, the CEO is rapidly losing his mind (anyone that has dealt with Kagemasa [the current Konami CEO] in recent times says he's different, and not in a good way), and the usual fun. It feels like the exec are using the company lawyers against their own staff right now."

While, again, reports like this one can't be accounted as factual evidence due to their weak accountability, the circulation of such voices around the Web is certainly proof per se that the fears of the Bemani division steadily being torn apart and put to an end have become alive once again. It doesn't help either that from the public relation-related side of Konami, the answer that was given to the Bemani Fan Site followers has been as generic as a PR can be. Below is one of official statements that was sent as an answer to the Fan Site's changes, cropped out and embed in tweet form; the following English translation has been provided by Ziv forum user Pie-kun.

"Thank you for always supporting BEMANI. Regarding your concern about the BEMANI fan site that you wrote us about, we are currently not publishing artist pages because of circumstances at the company. Please forgive us that we are not able to give you more detailed information.

Thank you for sharing your valuable opinion about our contents with us, we will share your feedback with the company. Thank you for your continued support of BEMANI."

...so there you have it; much like the MGS situation, here we have an equal to the music game scenario of Konami where hints of disaster are appearing on a quite alarming rate while what's actually going on in the background is still a mystery to (almost) everyone. As devoted music game fans, we truly hope that the whole accolade will have a happy epilogue...

English translation
Hey, a lot's changed, hasn't it
Even the school road we've been using for 3 years
I've dropped the habit too
Of walking on my heels while wearing the indoor slippers

Riding the loop train, riding a merry go round
They both spin around the same places, seeing scenery all around
Which change, little by little, to the future
Now we can paint many wonderful colors with our hands!

My back feels uneasy, my insides churn, but still
I write the word 'person' on my hand
Whether or not we liked this song
For some reason, all of us sang the school anthem today, with tears in our eyes

There, what should I draw
On this blackboard which feelings of gratitude are woven?
Hey, that looks seriously alike
The homeroom teacher's face, down to the usual red jersey...

The school uniforms that were still baggy at the entrance ceremony, too
Those having became so familiarly worn before we know it, will be its last today
Everyone lining up and smiling for the picture
Promising a constant friendship and whichever day we meet again

Still, there is still just a tad before I become an adult
I start to lose heart and feel the hesitation

As I find a nice color that suits the self that I still do not know of

The wings that grew on my back are
Still small and do not yet look reliable
A song sang to a blue spring (= bloom of youth)
Speaking of "spreading wings into a shining future" even still
