Taiko no Tatsujin Blue Version: Rewards Shop

$

Originated from Momoiro Version, the Rewards Shop allows Banapassport players to unlock new elements for the arcade play (namely, customization avatar elements and songs) that are not unlockable through the unlocking of selective avatar titles. Previously a service which was exclusive to the Donder Hiroba platform, the Rewards Shop functionalities have been reworked from Yellow Version, disbanding the former system based on the Don Point/Shopping Point currency and dividing its catalog into two main different outlets, each using their own currency.

Together with the main Rewards Shop alternatives, the service is also supporting other theme-based outlets that are available for a limited time (like for the case of collaboration events and such), which also refer to one of the two currencies used in the main RS sections.

Don Medal Rewards Shop (どんメダル ごほうびショップ)

The following limited item outlets offers a season-based selection of purchasable items, exchangeable with the eponymous Don Medal (どんメダル) currency that can be earned by playing with the Taiko arcade line; on top of the fixed amount of points awarded after each play (100 Don Medals), its possible to earn bonus points upon fulfilling certain conditions or over the course of special events. The Don Medal-based shops can be accessed both through the Donder Hiroba platform and on any up-to-date Taiko arcade machine, right before a regular credit play.

The shops based on the Don Medal currency feature a lineup of items that are only available across a limited time span, resulting in the removal of the currently-active shop after its expiration date in exchange for a new shopping outlet. After every season, all the Don Medals gained will also be deleted, so that players have to start the point collection all over in order to gain access to the new shops' items.

Under any Rewards Shop period, the player's maximum amount of Don Points won't go any higher than the overall amount of Don Points required to purchase all the offered items.

Katsu Medal Rewards Shop (かつメダル ごほうびショップ)

The following shops offer a selection of rewards that can be unlocked by using varying amounts of Katsu Medal (かつメダル), earned after any kind of arcade play (except Dojo Ranking/Tokkun mode credit plays) with no special performance increments of sorts. Unlike with Don Medals, however, Katsu Medals don't ever expire, as they're aimed for the acquisition of rewards that tend to be available at any time of the year in general. Katsu Medal shops can only be browsed within the Donder Hiroba.

The default shops that are based on this kind of currency have no expiration date, with updates occurring at a more rare rate (eg. arcade firmware update). The reward selection offered by those outlets mainly consists of all the not-limited items from the previous Taiko firmware builds' discontinued version of the Rewards Shop, with some extra elements that are added over time.

Each arcade play nets 100 Katsu Medals. The upper limit of Katsu Medals which is possible for a player to bear at any time is 10000; furthermore, the previously-earned points have to be spent in order not to lose future Katsu Medal gains.

Song of the Week! 17 March 2018

Today's Idolm@ster feature will be a doozy for someone who is looking for a challenge, as the two featured picks can provide some of the hardest rhythm gaming trials in Bandai Namco grounds!

 Next Life
Version
Allx3 (151)x4 (182)x7 (374)x10 (876)
 im@s MS Red

Today's first pick features a couple of people we've already mentioned in the song features from two weeks ago: the idol Hibiki Ganaha (我那覇響) -voiced by Manami Numakura (沼倉愛美)- and Akitaka 'AJURIKA' Tohyama (遠山明孝). Next Life, in fact, is another of Hibiki's image songs, created by the seasoned Seafood Namco Original songs composer.

Making its overall debut on April 1st, 2009 with the release of the THE IDOLM@STER MASTER SPECIAL 03 album from the Master soundtrack series, Next Life made its first playable debut in games of the series as a playable solo song in the franchise's first music game spinoff: the Funky Note version of the PSP music game THE iDOLM@STER SHINY FESTA. Other credited appearances of the song in general Idolm@ster media include the PS3 title THE iDOLM@STER Shiny TV and a musical cameo in one of the Idolm@ster Anime series.

Its rhythms may sound familiar to Taiko fans to something like the KARMA(Tatsujin Mix) track coming from Tekken grounds; surprisingly enough, that's actually closer to what inspired this Idolm@ster track's musical direction! In an interview with AJURIKA that was released for Famitsu (link), the composer recalled the suggestion made to him by another Namco-affiliated artist: Koji Nakagawa (中川浩二), who took a listen to the Karma(Electric Fountain) track that AJURIKA made for Tekken 6 and and simply asked "I want you to make something like this one".

The resemblance with KARMA (Tatsujin Mix) can also be felt into its aggressive Oni notechart, the only 10-star challenge in its debut Taiko videogame. Aside from some early scrolling visual trickery with multiple layers of timing bars waving up and down at the player, the song maintains a stable BPM value all throughout the play, dictated in Taiko form by an aggressive barrage of note clusters of every kind and shape. Several 1/24 density spikes are enough to go up and beyond the call of duty on the difficulty scale for Full Combo attempts, so an additional layer of care has to be put in order to achieve the Ban-Nam goroawase notecount on this track!

Our second pick of the day takes us to the image song of another of the Cinderella Girls idols, and as we've already done features in the past about both a Cute-attribute idol and a Cool-attribute one, let's finish off this impromptu trilogy with a representative from the Passion class, the last one.

TOKIMEKI (lit. 'Excitement') Escalate is the second image song of Mika Jougasaki (城ヶ崎美嘉), voiced by Haruka Yoshimura (佳村はるか), composed by Tetsuya Uchida (内田哲也) and lyricized by the nick-named marhy. Premiered on August 8th, 2012 with the Cinderella Master album THE IDOLM@STER CINDERELLA MASTER 009 Jougasaki Mika, this song made a cameo in the Cinderella Girls anime's 3rd episode, with its first credited appearance in a game of the series with the gacha/music game THE iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls: Starlight Stage. While not shining that much among other challenge contemporaries on Taiko grounds, TOKIMEKI Escalate on Starlight Stage is often regarded as one of the game's hardest songs, thanks to a really aggressive MASTER mode notechart!

Speaking of Mika herself, she's a pink-haired idol whose bonds with her younger sister Rika have made her really capable of handle and getting along with younger kids. In Taiko fields, this idol has had quite the share of the spotlight, being involved in several Taiko x Idolm@ster CG collaborations as the performer of different tracks (Tulip; the Idolm@ster cover of Angel Dream) and one of the members of the fictional LiPPS unit, providing special event dialogue with the other members. She also got quite the Taiko fanservice-y card variant for the first Cinderella Girls mobage!

Between the Call charting portions, the repeating note patterns and some unusual KDK/DKD note cluster formations, TOKIMEKI Escalate's Oni mode is quite the exotic blend of charting features for your average modern 6-star trial! Together with Anzu no Uta, this is also one of the few CG tracks that can be played both on Taiko and on Synchronica (link).

A lot of the Cinderella Girls songs in Taiko are used to come out together with an Ura Oni mode tacked in, and TOKIMEKI Escalate is no exception to this rule! The name of the game is handswitch shenanigans for clusters of varying kinds and shapes, up until a killer deathstream which is very reminiscent to the final portion of the song's MASTER mode on Starlight Stage. Thread lightly!

After Taiko no Tatsujin's Ura Oni additions to the very first Tenkaichi Otogesai song crossovers, maimai's Ignis Danse boost and SOUND VOLTEX's Heaven mode power-up, the Groove Coaster series is the next one of the Otogesai participants to have some of the event's songs made more difficult, as part of an event that segways into the 4th main installment to the series (GC4 Starlight Road).

As a means to that, both of the 2nd edition of the crossover tournament's Groove Coaster songs have received a top-tier-difficulty Extra mode that make the formerly-introduced Hard notecharts pale in comparison! This sure is a way mo make both Solar Storm and Scarlet Lance relevant once again...

Tongachin (トンガチン) (4/6/7/9; 474 notes on Oni)

Today's last Donder Pack for Session de Dodon ga Don was released, and while we don't know if this is going to be the last DLC content for the PS4 debut Taiko title or not, we do know at least that there's a new Namco Original to talk about, whose title's meaning apparently amounts to nothing!

Kimitata Matsumae's debut Namco Original fares in the Oni mode playground as one of those 9-star Oni modes with not that much to talk about on the note amount, relying more on the song's irregular rhythms for its difficulty degree rather than for the notechart itself's complexity.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

As a post-scriptum note to this blog entry, we inform you that both the free early-adopter Namco Original DLC Ryuu to Kokuen no Himegimi and all the store-exclusive pre-order Game Music tracks are now publicly available as paid DLC, each being sold at 150 Yen (+ taxes).

Yeah, we have to dedicate one post's title as a double-meaning-carrier for the non-Japanese arcade Taiko players, as the now-concluded March Facebook tournament is also going to be the very last one to be held.

Once again, it appears that the distance between the fanbase and the franchise on foreign arcade grounds has become longer once more...

Random: Notechart Copy-ception Between Splatoon and Taiko no Tatsujin

Back when Splatoon 2 just came out, we talked about its rhythm minigame Squid Beatz 2 (イカラジオ2, Ika Radio 2) and how it has a little homage section for the already-out Calamari Inkantation Oni notechart on Taiko no Tatsujin.

Now that Splatoon 2 Medley has been out on Taiko no Tatsujin (Blue ver., and soon on Nintendo Switch Version too), let's venture onwards to the second episode of this saga.

The Splatoon 2 Medley consists of the following three parts as from the original soundtrack:
  • Rip Entry, in-universe by Wet Floor, one of the stage BGMs
  • Now or Never!, again by Wet Floor canonically, that comes on when there's only one minute left on the timer
  • Turf Master, the results theme (with no "real" notes to play here but a balloon)
And as you know, Splatoon 2 has the rhythm minigame mode known to reference Taiko no Tatsujin notechart patterns, so let's cross-check the Hard notecharts with the Oni notechart and... they match! Almost a one-to-one lift from the original actually, making it a third in the whole series after Extreme MGG★★★ and Music Revolver.

Like last time, the Splatoon social media team also took time to speak about the song inclusion, and with explicit mention that Squid Beatz 2 is used as reference for both Muzukashii and Oni, plus a little hint for the uninitiated of the Ura notechart. With them acknowledging the fact and all, these two homages are likely a conscious choice between Namco/Taiko Team and Nintendo. Now if only Super Mario Oddessey has a rhythm minigame, we could have teased the notechart months ahead...
For more on the inclusion including Ura Oni (which is the main event anyway), check also the Nintendo Medley Song Series Showcase that Lokamp just updated.

With the original Idolm@ster themed month counting four entries, we're ending its sequel period at the 4th installment as well, with a couple of slightly-tweaked, omni-present tracks that have become Japanese meme fodder along the years...

 Town ~Must Mix~
Version
Allx2 (116)x3 (177)x3 (275)x7 (444)

The twin Must Songs Taiko games for the PlayStstion Vita have been graced with the addition of a number of tracks that can't be attributed by Bandai Namco as coming from a specific game/CD/Anime that is related to the series... or, as it's the case of this and the next track, how about songs that are available in almost every single Idolm@ster game to date as BGM tracks?

The original Town is one of the menu screen jingles that can be heard in many of the series' installments and as such, it wasn't featured in any official soundtrack of the series as of now; while this usually leads to no clues to its creator, it's heavily speculated that the formerly-affiliated Bandai Namco musician Go Shiina (椎名豪) was the one responsible for the quirky piece. What really made the everlasting impact for Town, however, was the meme-fueled treatment that it was given by countless Internet commentators over Nico Nico Douga, which was what ultimately led to the song to be known by the 'Te-Te-Te- (てってってー)' nickname.

Town's organ-based chorus makes it so that people listening to it might follow the rhythm by humming an ear-wormy 'Te-Te-Te, Te-Te-TeTe-' piece, a trend which made its transition to the Nico Nico Douga fields as part of parody/MAD compilation pieces where Town's chorus is featured all of a sudden (and without a context), causing the video's viewers to spam the 'Te-Te-Te' Japanese phase to go along with the chorus. This quickfire-comment-spamming meme was so effective, in fact, that the very song Town has been chosen as the theme song for the Weekly Nico Nico Video Ranking, a tradition that continues to this day!

This brings us to the release of the Must Song games, where the infamous Town was remixed by Yuji Masubuchi (増渕裕二) in order to be made playable for Taiko means. The seasoned Bandai Namco musician's "Must Mix" rendition of Town simply consists of the original song being looped a bunch of times, with the voice actresses from the original 765Pro idol roster singing the 'Te-Te-Te-' portions in many different ways, as a tribute to said meme's everlasting impact on the series' lore. Even the song's ID refers to it, with the onomatopoeic imsttt!

Gameplay-speaking, this is one of the Taiko charts which is played at half the scrolling speed for the entire playing time, sporting a pattern-repeating 1/16 notechart with some slight variations along the way. By playing this song, the original 765Pro agency clerk Kotori Otonashi (音無小鳥) will be featured as the main custom dancer rather than any other idol, with a parade of mini Taiko drum characters as backup!

With the Red Album bearing the more meme-based Town BGM, the Blue Album holds the BGM track which hosted the bigger potential for hard Taiko charts of the two! Much like with Town, it's not possible to precisely pinpoint the identity of the composer who was behind the more lively Thinking BGM tune, but we can say for sure that its coming in a "Must Mix" version can be attributed to the same couple that brought the Must Mix of Town to life: arranger Yuji Masubuchi and notecharter Kuboken (くぼけん). Being a "Must Mix", this one too doesn't fail to mention the Te-Te-Te- meme towards the end!

Repeating notechart formations and mono-colored clusters aside, this is easily the hardest Oni contender for the 8th-star slot out of today's two featured tracks, as the note density is prominently higher on this one! This rendition of the Thinking BGM has also more fun on the custom scrolling-speed department, from a goroawase-friendly beginning burst of x7.65 the base BPM speed to many different overlapping timing ticks that flow at different speeds towards the player, all at the same time on the screen (usually referred to by us with the yes-it's-still-patented trippy barlines(TM) label).

Taking a page from many modern gauntlets with both long clusters and merciless 1/24 cluster spikes a-la Music Revolver (Ura), Thinking's Must Mix bears a scary difficult bump with its additional difficulty layer, playing even more on the player's own stamina while factoring more intricate cluster formations to mentally map for landing proper hits.

As we also previously notes in the past in one of our more random-nature features, there's an unusual layer of significance lying in the beginning portion of the notechart, as it's possible to literally form out a specific letter/number formation by visually arranging the note patterns in a very specific way! Head over to this link to find out more about it...

While this has been the end of the Idolm@ster SotW sequel month, that doesn't mean we're entirely skipping next week out, either! Our next Song of the Week entry, however, will take place next Sunday instead. See you then!

I want to protect, my loving world

"Oh, um, uh, from this day onwards, this town
shall be given over to me, the great Takemikazuchi!"

"What now, if this goes on our town would have been taken over!"

There is the one and only thing I will not give up
That would be promises committed to me
Since I have sworn to let no one break it
Not even when the two come entangled together like this

"Nakata-chan! Time to transform into the muscular magical girl!"
"I-I don't really get what's going on, but here goes nothing!
 Puroro, Protera, Proterali
 Witness this Magical Pump Up!"
"How's this? Such stunning muscular beauty
 Magical Girl, Takeminakata!"
"Hmph, that transformation is useless anyway
Commence the battle of strength, and should I win
This town shall be handed over at once"
"I would not let that happen
Come as usual and let the battle begin!"

Since whenever this body of mine
Has become muscles even to the brain
Stretch your heart, hold your fist, the courage mustered up
Could not have been stifled
It is heating up, my muscle heart

"Oh~ no~"
"With a Front Force-out, it's Nakata-chan's victory!"
"Hold on, what is this supposed to be
Isn't that against how the story goes?"
"When you conquer your muscles, you can conquer mythology too
Kazuchi-chan, why not do some muscle training together too?"
"Huuuh?"
"Hmph!"

The heavy flesh that envelops me
Could not be held in only one person's arms

Cast that magic on myself
And let the unwavering force wells up
Force yourself forward, exchange your thrusts, the forward pushes served to this body
Had me covered with mud
I want to protect, my loving world

"I'm Kazuchi Takemi from Takama-ga-hara High. Pleased to meet you."
"Eeeh!? Kazuchi-chan is the transfer student!?"
"On the next episode of Muscular Magical Girl Takeminakata,
 'Rival as the Transfer Student?'"
"Let me also give your heart, a Magical Pump Up!"

Credit to chatbox user simple1 for the find!

With the current Taiko news scenario reaching one of its all-time lows (quite worrying too, considering that a new arcade firmware has just come out), one Twitter user's game center finds have brought to light a new collaboration campaign, this time tying in the Case Closed series.

The nearing release day of the latest CC movie -titled Detective Conan: Zero The Enforcer (名探偵コナン ゼロの執行人)- has led to all the Taiko arcades' high scores to become nothing than a bunch of zeroes, and it's up to arcade goers to solve the case! By playing Blue Version arcades in the promo period (Katsu in the posters hints to 2-player Detective Conan Main Theme plays), it's possible to gather up clues that would help the contestants to solve a puzzle on the campaign's official website. Everyone can join the investigations from April 18th to May 31st, with 20 people among the case solvers to be randomly-chosen for the big prize!

As the tweets points out, the aforementioned promo website (nazotoki.taiko-ch.net) is still offline, so we'll have to wait for further details on this campaign.

The time to awaken the joker inside us has come back once more! Let's see how the music game network has welcomed the returning April Fools silliness outside of Taiko grounds...

With arcade Taiko gaming getting a new version on March, NAMCO SOUNDS composer Taku Inoue woke up with a fresh idea to turn Synchronica's relevance upside-down: a firmware makeover that is all about himself! Thus, here's the so-dubbed Inotakunica (イノタクニカ), already fully operative for every arcade goer to enjoy!

The Konami-rooted Bemani, on the other hand, is busier pluggin the launch of 100% accurate products that are sure to hit the market really soon. One of these is jubeat POCKET, an LCD version of the eponymous music game series to bring the joys of the main games wherever you go... and stylin' like a Game and Watch, no less!

It's time for another schooling from one of the main SOUND VOLTEX navigators, and this time around the teacher is high-inched Maxima!

For today only the Lv.1 Heavenly CLASS ANALIZER course with the song Maxima's Full Bloom!! Heavenly Lecture❤  (マキシマ先生の満開!! ヘヴンリー講座❤ ) is here to teach some mnemonics to its challengers. With plenty of fade-to-black action and playing field panning-out, only your mind is a safe haven from getting mistakes.

The last Bemani jokers in line are from the latest music game series made by the Konami division: the piano-based Nostalgia (ノスタルジア), which is inviting its Twitter followers to check out one day-exclusive addition to the CLASSIC AND JAZZ song genre...

If you happen to crank up the day-exclusive Koinu no Waltz (子犬のワルツ, lit. 'Puppy's Waltz'), be prepared to be served with a cover of one of Chopin's waltz pieces (which was also used for a Taiko-exclusive rock arrangement) where the player's inputs have been replaced by lil' pups barking. Even cats are invited to the ensemble!

Away from Bemani stuff, Taito's Groove Coaster series plays it safe for this year, with the rehash of the April Fool song's voiceover alterations for Seine and Miria, the latest couple of voiced navigators in the series.

If you're a mobile Groove Coaster player, however, here's your chance to play the high-difficulty joke song 2112410403927243233368 as many times as you can for the reminder of the day! It comes with special avatar/title unlocks, no less.

As for the previous years, independent composer Cran-urk, I mean Crunky- has drawn his best impression of Seine, the newcoming Groove Coaster 4's flagship navigator. It's also fun to see how the official Groove Coaster Twitter account chimed in with a colorized version of this stunning portrait!

Third time is the charm for the CHUNITHM crew, as the return of the April Fools shenanigans have brought up yet another rendition of a populkar Touhou Project arrangement by the hands of Sega's fictional idol unit Irorimidori (イロドリミドリ).

And so, the returning performers combined with the crazy composing magic of their special course-charting remote, the song Usotei (ウソテイ) came to be, a remix to COOL&CREATE's popular Usatei (ウサテイ). As usual, this limited WORLD'S END mode is not for the faint of heart!

The other two Touhou April Fools tracks from the past 2 years are also coming back, for a total of 4 days.

For the maimai devs, on the other hand, April 1st means business, as you can see from the 100%-original prototype for their next re-interpretation of the long-running music game series. With the echoing motto of 'CLEAN UP ALL STEREOTYPES', maimai III is sure to bring the fun for up to 3 players at the same time, with a floppy drive to save the players' progress, a foot pedal and a dance mat to allow 3-people simultaneous multiplayer action by the same screen!

The glorious announcement was celebrated with a couple of the maimai III songs coming to the currently-active maimai version (maimai MiLK), with COOL&CREATE's Sissou Ensemble (疾走あんさんぶる) being available as an Otoge-only challenge, showcasing, the aforementioned 3-people gameplay! For some more "traditional" gameplay action, here's also Mami Tanaka's Miracle Shopping (ミラクル・ショッピング), straight from the Yakuza series. Donkey's shop theme song also comes with a real-life CM video, no less!

2018 has been a particularly bountiful year for mobile gaming pranks! The first one in sight is for Noxy's smartphone game Lanota, enlightening its players of the coming of 'Hand Mode'.

Are the game's most difficult challenges making you scream in agony? Just let a couple of cats do the playing for you!

If you are an Arcaea player, make sure to check out its latest features, such as the Grievous Random option in the song-selecting screen and quite the weird pickle to deal with if you play with said new feature a little too much...

Taking a page from SOUND VOLTEX's past April Fools' efforts, the free-to-play Arcaea song Ignotus gets a corrupted playable version in Ignotus Afterburn, with the chart becoming quite unstable to play with, visuals-speaking. Plus, just give a look at the song's credited artists and charting crew to have a good laugh at the expenses of the meme-ascending "Bemani Sound Team" label!

Rayark's VOEZ has seen the return of one kind of spicy joke: slightly altering a pre-existing song's title and album art and replacing its usual charts into unlikely gauntlets! It has already happened years ago with the song GameGame, and now it's time for Ras's Praystation of BMS fame.

Worry do not, the Easy mode is not the only one to get severe alterations! Feel free to check out the Hard mode's note ninja movements, as well as Special mode's unreasonable multiple-input sessions and black-out sliders!

To end things swiftly, here we are with a collection of gameplay videos from the hardest songs in cygames's Granblue Fantasy-themed clone Oira (オイラ), of which we also talked about yesterday (link). Up here is the hard-trial contender Kurobyin no Tsubasa (黒ビィんの翼), starring the joke character from former April Fools event in the Granblue Fantasy lore.

The Ultimate (ジ・アルティメット)
